Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Saw The Wolverine for the first time and was pleasantly surprised. Last third of the movie got a little over the top but was enjoyable throughout. Thought it was a significant step up from X-Men Origins: Wolverine, thankfully. Looking forward to Logan now.Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Ringu
I had seen it once before, but I think it can of ran in the background the last time I saw it. This isn't a very good thing to do when a film is in Japanese and you have to read subtitles. This time, I paid so much attention that I didn't do so much as bat an eyelid.
The Ring is my favorite horror movie of all time, and boy am I glad it was made because I don't feel this one quite hit the mark that the U.S. remake did. I just think that it ran a little too short and didn't "fill out" as much as it could have. I think this was cool to watch though, because having seen the U.S. version I was able to fill in some gaps from this film, and it helped me see the U.S. version in a bit of a different light as well knowing what I saw here.
Of course, the U.S. version took its own liberties... but it was also interesting when I watched some parts and said, "Man, the U.S. writers really borrowed some elements very heavily from the original Japanese version." Quite a few things were the same. Ah well, I just think they did it better here in the states. Glad they still did it here first to begin with, though. I think this one was just "naturally" creepy," but I don't know if it would make me lose sleep at night. I'm certainly immune to it now at this point, but it was a great watch nonetheless.
Ringu 2
I kind of had a lot of excitement going into this film, because I went under the assumption that the American release of The Ring Two was an original story, so this was going to be a new take on more Ring-like scares and such that I had yet to see. I was partly right, but like The Ring Two, it probably just raised more questions than answering them, and events happened without the audience (myself) ever really being directly informed of it. To put it bluntly, possession is a part of this story line much like Two, only you don't know it for quite a while in the film even though it had already happened.
It was also confusing in its place in time. I guess connecting it, we are only looking at maybe a week after Ringu at most. It carries on with side characters from the first film, but they were side characters the first time for a reason: they really shouldn't be carrying the entire film. I now see that The Ring borrowed a few more elements from this film as well as the first one, so it's not like it was all for naught either... but in the end, there were maybe only like one or two legitimate scary moments to take away, and the rest kind of made you shrug your shoulders and say: "Okay, so where do we go from here?" I guess The Sadako 3D films may answer that, but those were so far down the road that I'm sure they are brand new storylines entirely.
I think you can skip this one.
Ringu 0
This one was top-notch. A very beautifully written and shot psychological drama, with some horror elements added to the mix. If there's anything that somebody might feel disappointed about with this film, it's that it really does victimize Sadako as opposed to vilify her. The actress who portrays her is a very beautiful woman, and plays a world of living innocence equally as much as her ghostly demonic counterpart plays out as evil and scary.
Going into it, I wondered if I could go with an "origin" story, or even more so a Ring film that didn't involve a tape and curse. Turns out I could. I don't know if its roots could play out the same as an American remake and be heralded, but given how they built this story from its novel roots previously in Japan and given the idea of the curse playing out more so as a virus in the Japanese/Korean films, this one made a lot of sense.
I think this was the best of the three, but of course it doesn't work without the original one... so hats off to a terrific prequel, and something that actually truly did want me to explore more of the Ring lore, unlike Ringu 2. I may have to dig into some of the novels next before watching the Sadako 3D films (which I won't expect to be great).Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Passengers. Must see TV. There is one part I did not understand, though...
SpoilerWhat the hell is Andy Garcia doing in this movie as a cameo?? That was so weird. They could have gotten the maintenance man in the building at the time to play that role!!Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
The wife and I saw Split Saturday night. We really enjoyed it and M. Knight has now made two very solid horror films in a row (The Visit being the other one).
Split’s acting was top notch. The ending was not as satisfying as I had hoped, but it was terrifying. I won’t ruin the tie in at the end either to another really good earlier film M. Knight made.
Oerall 3 out of 4 stars for us and I would recommend it.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Well, it looks like Get Out is a movie to see (the trailer interested me more than any other trailer I've seen before), and it was at 100% in over 140 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes... until the notorious contrarian Armond White gave it its first negative review.
Some people are entitled to their own opinion, but he can't help but purposefully be different. It's kind of a dick move, but I'd like to see this film and reserve judgment for myself, of course. It's just... he's now pretty much trolling more than anything else when he does this. Pretty absurd.
EDIT: I also want to mention that he apparently spoils the film front and center in his review without any fair warning. So unless you see it (which I have yet to), don't be curious about what he had to say in his review just yet.Last edited by Blzer; 02-28-2017, 12:11 AM.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
He has reviewed 131 films that would have a 90+% RT rating without his involved. Of those films, he has given 70 of them negative ratings. That's over half of those films! Probably the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen.
As far as the Best Picture Oscar nominees, he has given negative reviews to Moonlight, La La Land, and Manchester by the Sea. I want to reiterate that there is no requirement to like certain movies, nor is there to like something that everybody else likes. This is very intentional, though.
He gives positive reviews for every Wayans Brothers movie, many Jason Statham flicks, and other films like I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. If that ain't intentional, I don't know what is lol.Last edited by Blzer; 02-28-2017, 12:09 AM.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Honestly though, why should he stop? He's getting exactly what he wants: attention. His paper is probably really popular and a huge talk of the town. Some people think the stunt at the Oscars last night was an intentional ploy for the same reason.
Here, you're from OS, let's put it this way... he's the goh of RT.Last edited by Blzer; 02-28-2017, 12:50 AM.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment
