So earlier in the decade an Argentine company got rights to make feature length animated adaptations of Hanna Barbera characters. Well apparently Top Cat is popular because there was not one, but TWO movies starring him and his alley pals. I watched the first one and it wasn't too bad all things considered. It did get a bit dark what with a plot dealing with an ugly (physically and emotionally) character taking over the NYPD with surveillance and robots. Top Cat even gets thrown into dog jail! Eventually he gets rescued by his pals and Officer Dibbles.

Like I said it wasn't bad and the animation was pretty interesting (CGI backgrounds and environments with 2D animation) and the humor wasn't offensive. I mean, I wouldn't go out of your way to look for this but it wasn't terrible.

John Wick 3

I absolutely loved it. Right up there with the 1st one or might be better. Just absolute carnage.

Also a couple of guys who were in The Raid are in it so there influences on the fight choreography can be noticed. Close non gun combat was definitely the best out of the 3.

Keanu Reeves is a legend. He just straight up worked his *** off in this movie. Standing ovation type work on all his action stuff and the guy is almost 55 years.

Ian McShane is great as usual and really loved Asia Kate Dillon from Billions (Taylor) performance.

Hell yeah Halle and the dogs were awesome. I was gonna get Belgian Malinois a couple years ago, nice reminder what awesome and smart dogs they are. Some of those attacks were amazing, I think it’s the best ever using an animal as a weapon in a movie I ever seen.

I love this franchise, it’s up there with my favorites of all time now.

BIG UPS to the stunt team as well. That was just masterful work by all the stunt guys and Keanu. Even Boban Marjanovic was awesome! Was so shocked with his performance, he can be the new Jaws in the Bond franchise.

Fargo

Obviously this is a classic movie and one that most everyone has already seen. That said, I can watch it on infinite loop. One of the few movies I can say that about (Shawshank Redemption, Goodfellas, The Godfather, 40 Year Old Virgin).

The acting (Frances McDormand, William H. Macy, Steve Buscemi) is just so good. Keeping up their Minnesota accents can carry entire scenes by just saying "yah" in different tones to each other. Another thing that I appreciate more each time I see it--the orchestral music is really good. Brooding, dissonant, tragic. The music doesn't get the credit it deserves due to the plot and the acting.

The details are so underrated in this movie. It's like there's no wasted anything. Down to the kid not finishing his dinner and wanting to go to McDonald's and the way his mom reacts to daytime TV while knitting. And Marge is always thinking about food. lol

Aladdin

Compared to that of Beauty and the Beast, this is not a bitter attempt at being a shot-for-shot of the original. Yes, it hits the same beats, sequences, and the songs are largely the same... but they attempt to improve upon logical issues of the original, provide different narrative motives, and provide a complete overhaul to Agrabah. All that being said, I think if you're someone who somehow missed the original film, that it's still best you see it before this one, because it still feels like they rely on the fact that you've seen that one to fill parts that they seemingly gloss over more this time around (mostly in the beginning).

The songs were mostly good (I was actually let down by the "Whole New World" sequence yet amazed at "Friend Like Me"), but all choreography was phenomenal, so it was still visually pleasing to watch all the same. Yet, that's the most connection I felt with this film: the glamour. I wasn't too emotionally invested in anyone with anything, as there was some sort of emotional disconnect between me and what was happening on the screen. I don't even know what caused this, but even when Aladdin is sparing homeless children some food I'm not thinking: "Aww, sweet kids and a good guy too!" like I would in the cartoon. Anyway, as I'm comparing, I'd like to let you know that I did watch the original again earlier today.

As far as characters go, Aladdin was good but the goofy angle they brought to him was a little too much, Jasmine was great and felt like the most connectable character, Genie was very cool in all instances but a bit jiggly in the animation lol, Jafar sucked and I wanted to give him every chance but I think that fell flat, Abu was decent, Raja was bad-*** looking but wasn't ever given anything to actually act upon, I enjoyed the magic carpet and the visuals with it, Iago was great I thought (even though they took away the personality of the character for the sake of a bit more realism), and the sultan was eh.

I was very disappointed by the final act, but that's all I'll say on that. Anyway, I liked the movie more than I thought it was good, and the crowd was plenty pleased by it as well. Don't know if I'll be adding it to any collection, but I certainly would before that Beauty and the Beast remake, that's for sure.

EDIT: And as far as easter eggs go, one of the characters does the Walt Disney logo during the film. I won't explain it in further detail than that, but if you check out the flick, see if you can catch it!

Thanks for the in-depth review, Blzer. I haven't (and don't plan to) see the Aladdin remake, but I was quite surprised by Beauty and the Beast. Even more surprising is that given the choice of the original and the remake to view, I'll watch the remake.

I just think so much love and respect to the original was poured into it and it was very well cast. Luke Evans was a wonderful Gaston, and I admit to being a bit of a sucker for Emma Watson. I knew it was going to be something special with that wonderful little sequence with Kevin Kline towards the beginning remembering his wife.

For the record, not keen to see "The Lion King" remake either, just based on the trailers anyway. I may try it on video.

Saw Aladdin today. Definitely wasn't perfect but I enjoyed it. Could have done without some of the hip-hop flare added to some of the songs. Characters were fine.

That reminds me...I also saw Booksmart. Saw nothing about it except the over 90 RT rating. Was really well done. Will definitely remind of Super Bad. My only issue was the cliche drama students.

I love movies with happy endings. so this one was perfect. dont get me wrong, movies with endings like No Country For Old Men & SE7EN are still classics, but I prefer endings that dont leave me depressed. if wanted depressionm, I have real life

For anybody that has been the one that is with the beloved friend during that last moment, I really don't need to see a movie that reminds me of that moment, and of the two more times I will have to experience it coming in the near future.

BTW, The Art of Racing in the Rain fits the mold of this experience but is a little different. I sure enjoyed the book and may take in the movie version.
