Re: What movies the have you seen recently?

Saw Rocketman on Friday. Generally liked it, but even though it's a fantasy more than biography, I didn't like it that songs were taken out of context, meaning that some songs weren't even written when they were presented in the movie (mostly mid 70's songs shown during the early 70's).

Taron did a good job and looked like Elton, especially during the mid-70's version of Elton. My main issue with the movie is that Taron...sounded NOTHING like Elton John. To me, that just hurt the experience. Unlike other musical biographies, this time it didn't work, in my opinion, when the music played. If they used Taron for acting and the real Elton (from back then) for singing, it would have been great. Also...when he was talking he didn't sound like Elton either, but I can look past that. The singing is what I had most trouble with.

Overall he did a great job being Elton and I can forgive the messed-up chronological inaccuracies since it's a fantasy.

Child's Play 2019. Meh. Not my cup of tea. Chuck's design was just weird.

The dead don't die. Boring. I walked out on this after the first 50 minutes. The lady next to me poked me on the shoulder to keep me awake. Went and sat in the lobby until Toy Story 4 started.

        Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

This has to be if not the best Spider-Man movie then certainly in the top three. Considering everything they do in two hours it is absolutely incredible how well it is executed. An incredible ride that hits all kinds of highs not only from the wonderful art direction, but the narrative strikes all the right notes. It is a surprisingly emotional and heavy movie with much more depth than most of it's live-action comic book movie counterparts. I watched this on Netflix, but this is a definite purchase.

The visuals alone make it one of the best movies I’ve seen in a long time. Great soundtrack. One of those movies you watch and have to pick your jaw up off the floor afterwards. Pretty standard fare as far as story for a superhero movie goes. I did find myself wanting a little more from Miles as Spider-Man, he only really became himself in the last 20 minutes of a 100 minute runtime. Getting some of the other Spider-Mans (the specific ones they picked) together was awesome. Fusing the comics with all the signature text boxes of that art form was so well done. I’m not a big comic guy and I was thrilled with it so I imagine those in to that medium were satisfied.

It’s nice Spiderverse is in 4K on Netflix. I still bought it day 1 though. My nephew is obsessed with Spider-Man and I love it, we watched this movie at least a dozen times now and not sick of it.

Saw this on the 4th of July. I loved it. If you are a fan of The Beatles then I highly recommend this movie. Great story and Himesh Patel was fantastic as the main character Jack Malik.

Watched the new Mary Poppins on Netflix.

I really enjoyed it, and it had completely new songs. No songs from the original, but if you are a fan of the original, there are a decent handful of callbacks.

I really wanted to like this movie but ended up disappointed. Now it’s not terrible but I came in with high hopes is all from a great trailer.
There were for sure nice moments and Himesh sang a couple of the songs really well but I just found it kinda boring and maybe I was reaching for a why moment on why were The Beetles gone and never got it.

                            Crawl

Let's get the bad out of the way first: the dialogue is absolutely atrocious. There is no other way to put it. The dialogue can't save a single scene, exchange or moment. Also, side characters are only served for their one single purpose, and then disposed of. This story is about the relationship between a girl and her father, trying to survive the elements: turbulent winds, treacherous waters, and terrifying alligators... at least they did this part right.

The alligators provided a bunch of carnage. It was gruesome, and it was fun to watch too. It's weird, because early in the movie they start off by not really "belonging in the environment" with their CGI, but maybe it's just because I haven't really seen them on screen much before or because they just didn't have much to interact with; as the movie went on though, you convinced yourself more and more that they were real almost as if the effects got better, but again the things they started to do gave them a realness factor. There is one shot that I would go watch the movie again just to see once more. It was absolutely brutal.

Alexandre Aja used the soundscape absolutely gorgeously for this film to heighten the auditory senses of the gators much like the blind man in Don't Breathe. It didn't exactly demand the audience's silence because there was a lot of relentless noise from crashing waters and high winds.

Now if there is one more bad thing to say, it's that "obstacles" (to cover a broad canvas) that hindered the main characters for a moment seemed to be a non-factor not even a minute later, and this happened several times. Okay, I'll be slightly more specific: so the father and daughter are also potentially susceptible to getting badly hurt in the haywire themselves, but it doesn't seem to ever slow them for a moment's time. Obviously I won't say how things turn out, but what would make us limp, or ehem crawl due to injury, they seem to brush it off and say "no biggie."

I have a feeling that Crawl underwent several iterations of the editing phase, and I don't know if they made all of the best pacing-based decisions. Nevertheless, I used the word "relentless" to describe the action, specifically with alligator presence, and this 87-minute feature was a fun watch for that alone. I do wish the dialogue was better, but there are some movies that can be excusing for it, and this might be one of them. It's a matinee/rental type, but if you are into films like the aforementioned Don't Breathe, this kind of fits within the same mold (though DB is superior IMO).

Older Oliver Stone is usually solid for me, but man I forgot how dark the movie is. Really like Eric Bogosian in it, even if he does remind me of Elliot Gould in it.

Also watched the first and sadly only season of a really good period drama "The Living and the Dead". Kind of a slight Gothic horror drama as well, with a larger mystery they drip feed to you throughout the six or so episodes.
