Re: What movies have you seen recently?

The last two movies I have watched:

Zack Snyder's Justice League and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Spiderman, in my opinion, was great. I enjoyed it and I know when a cartoon gets me choked up about a person (I think it happened twice in the movie) they did something right. The characters were great, the story was cool, and the character building felt good. I would give it a 10/10.

Justice League was not bad. I will probably never watch it again due to the length, but I would love to see them build off of the final scene (I know it is not going to happen.) I would say, I guess a 7/10? It was just too damn long for one movie.

Counting KvG as a Kong movie since so much is about him, I think they did much better with his movies than Zilla. I actually think the monsters were handled pretty well in both sets but Kong’s people were better IMO.

I put KOTM over GvK, because King Ghidorah is my favorite Godzilla adversary. But I give WB credit - they did justice to Toho's Big-Five.

        Mortal Kombat
I'm not sure who would enjoy this apart from those that have played the majority of the games over the past twenty years or so. Most of the moments I enjoyed were largely tied to context from the games. The Scorpion and Subzero fights are easily the best of the movie. Everything felt rushed in order to setup what should clearly be an HBO series rather than a movie trilogy or whatever is currently planned.

I feel like the games over the past decade have had better narratives and in terms of pure enjoyment factor the original movie definitely tops this one.

4 out of 10 for me. Storyline just wasn't good and I felt as though if you weren't a gamer, you would be sort of lost and think this was just a kung fu flick with magic. They should have done it like Marvel did it with their characters. Each character having their own movie thoroughly explaining their background and letting the actual Mortal Kombat movie, the actual tournament be movie number 6 or whatever. Imagine having Infinity War without all the other movies leading up to it. That is basically what this Mortal Kombat movie was.

My wife in her late 50s, not a gamer. She had no idea who these people were outside of Scorpion and Subzero. She also don't know the background of any of the characters or why they hate each other. She thought the movie was funny and said oh, so you kill somebody and get their powers ? Cool.....

My wife who is not a gamer at all, but she does like action movies, she really liked it.

I grew up on Mortal Kombat. I thought it was entertaining, but it wasn't anything special.

It definitely would have benefited from more exposition into the individual characters, via individual movies or a TV series though. Either that or just more Kombat throughout the movie.

I am a fan from the beginning of the series, and my son is a bigger fan and more knowledgeable than I am. We were fist bumping and ooh-ing and and ah-ing over the Scorpion family scenes in the beginning and those amazing fights. It was pacing for a 9 for us for about the first 30 minutes or so, then it kind of loses its steam and feels cobbled together. The fight scenes were still pretty good later on, but it did not live up to the quality of the opening scenes in our opinions. 5/10.

I don't even think you need an individual movie for each character, but split up among different related characters. Sonya, Jax, and Keno. Maybe throw Cage in there, too. Lui Kang, Kung Lao, and Raiden. Scorpion and Sub-Zero. Then either a whole Outworld movie or include it in the the ones. The beginning of this movie had me wishing the whole movie was about Scorpion and Sub-Zero.

As it is I didn't really feel anything for Cole which is unfortunate because he's the center of the movie.

Bob Odenkirk's movie Nobody was plenty of action and fun over the top violence (think Kill Bill) but just not enough meat on the bone. More video game than movie. I consider my $20 digital rental not that well spent.

On a positive note I will say that Odenkirk can pull off badass-I just hope the next time around he gets a better script.

                    Mortal Kombat

I had high hopes for this movie. I ignored the negative reviews that kept popping up in my news feed and hoped it was just people being too picky.

I was wrong. I felt that the acting was not very good for the majority of the movie. It felt like they were reading from a script, and it did not feel natural.

Like most people, outside of Scorpion and Sub-zero, I felt that there were not many bright spots in the movie. I will say, however, that Kabo was consistently my favorite character throughout. I needed more Kano, even though we already had a lot of him.

Unfortunately, I felt that the final fight of the movie was brought down
                    Spoiler

For a new character, Cole Young, to be created for the movie, and for him to be the center piece, I feel that he needed to bring something to the table, but he did not. The character was boring. His story was boring. And please, someone tell me..
                    Spoiler

Overall, I would have to give it a 4/10.

I want to give it lower, but Kano kept the score up for me.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?

Yeah Mortal Kombat was very uneven. Great characters like Kano, Sub Zero and flat performances with Lui Kang and Kung Lao. Cole by far was the worst. Out of all the characters you can pick from you make up one and make him lame.

Amazing stuff whenever Sub Zero or Scorpion was in scene. Also liked the casting of Jax and Sonya Blade. Just like I would imagine them.

This should have been a tv series, way too many characters and world building to do.

It’s a fantasy story at heart and someone should build it in the mind of a Game of Thrones where we follow different characters and realms.

It definitely would’ve been better as a miniseries but I enjoyed it enough for what it was. They had enough direct callbacks to the games to satisfy me between KL’s hat, Kabal, SZ. I’m also a big fan of my guy Joe Taslim after he’s killed it as Li Yong in Warrior. Kabal was dope, Kano was hilarious.

I liked it better than 95, which is the current bar for me. The idea that this was ever going to be an Infinity War level event or draw comparisons to GoT is nuts to me, this series has a dude jump up and yells toasty at random times and has characters named from the developer names spelled backwards. I’ve loved MK for 20 years, but there was no universe where anything MK was going to approach those IMO, so the comparisons didn’t even register for me.

Speaking of callbacks. In the fight scene with Sub-Zero and Jax in the background was a move easter egg. I also enjoyed Lui Kang spamming the sweep with Kano lol.

Unfortunately the best part of the movie was the first 7 minutes that they put out for free.
