Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Ticket To Paradise- great chemistry and some really funny scenes from Clooney and Roberts but a lot of empty moments and not so hot chemistry between the great Kaitlyn Dever and her romantic interest-worth seeing.Comment

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
Most of what I'd want to discuss would be spoiler-heavy (and I'm willing to have the conversation in tags if others would like to contribute), but I'll stay on the fringe for now.
I famously didn't much like the first film for three big reasons: (1) the story logic for me was clunky; (2) the CGI was atrocious; (3) not a negative, but unlike a big positive for connecting a lot to others beyond the film itself, it didn't do that for me. I'd say this film had other versions of this problem in #1 and #2, and everything that connected to me was superficially a result of Chadwick Boseman's passing and nothing more.
Let me start with things that I liked or didn't bother me (but may have bothered others). I was fine with the film's pacing in a first-viewing environment, I was fine with the use of the Black Panther itself, and I appreciated how they addressed T'Challa's absence overall. I thought set pieces worsened as the film went on but they certainly started off strong, and based off what I saw in the trailers I believe this movie to have pretty stunning visuals but my theater experience did not replicate that (in fact, night scenes were really hard to see in my theater). And once again like the first film, I really bought everything the antagonist was selling which made them more compelling overall. Performances were excellent overall. The score was very noticeable and built for some great ambience, and the Talokan were legitimately creepy in battle (by the way I'm sure they are portrayed like this in the comics, but I couldn't shake how they were some hybrid between Atlanteans and Na'vis).
Mostly everything else for me didn't work, though. What also upsets me is that I don't think there would be a lot of fundamental changes to the script had Chadwick Boseman been alive for this sequel. You can tell what they had to rewrite, but you can also tell what needed no alteration at the same time. A lot of those things that didn't need changes were a lot of the problems I had with the script. I couldn't grasp why conflicts wouldn't have naturally resolved themselves earlier on in the story, I loathed most all superhero costume designs or removing characters from how they operated in the first film, there were plot elements that bloated the runtime to serve nothing more than future films/shows and could have been completely removed (didn't hurt the pacing but it hurts repeat viewings with its time and reminds me that Disney is still heavily interfering), dramatic irony lingered too long purely for cinematic impact despite characters' expenses, and taking one of the side characters into the lead didn't even come close to filling the void caused by Chadwick Boseman's death. Oh, and the CGI was absolute crap.
Basically, I was hoping they would address some of the things I didn't like about the first movie, and I don't think that they did that here. Some of the concepts that I think were problematic with the first movie carried right into this one, and I think others loved the other movie so much that they not only forgave it for those shortcomings but they were oblivious to them. I'm wondering whether this film will resonate with them as much beyond how they respectfully honor Boseman's passing and the great performances. I don't think I disliked this movie, but it was really ho-hum and the script kicked me hard at the wrong times. Marvel has been like this for a while now, despite my being entertained by Love & Thunder (I consider No Way Home a Sony property, though that was also my least favorite of the three Holland movies to boot).
I think Phase 4 as a whole was a little scattered, and this movie is a bit emblematic of that.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

I guess I’m in the minority then because I loved the film.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
I don't think anyone is screaming Best Picture nomination for it though... and it behooves me why the first one was nominated as such but whatevs.
Again, for a first watch I was definitely engaged with the film. Unfortunately now that I know what I'd have to slog through (not by pacing, but story bits and some of the later action set pieces) it's hard for me to justify rewatching that 160 minute film over and again.Last edited by Blzer; 11-14-2022, 01:13 AM.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Lol why does it “behoove” you that the first one was nominated?
You don’t believe it was worthy of one?#RespectTheCultureComment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
The nominations are always weird, but I wouldn’t have nominated it personally. It wasn’t even the best superhero movie of its year to me, I’d have taken Infinity War or Spider-Verse over it but I can’t imagine either of those being nominated.
I thought the new one was good, not great, 3 out of 5ish but I want to see it again. Way too long. There’s a lot they’re trying to do and I feel like most of it is just kinda there. The way they dealt with Chadwick…was fine I guess. I thought the in universe handling of T’Challa’s death was pretty poor. Other than that, a lot like the first one. Best part plot-wise is the villain, but there’s a lot of great performances, Angela Bassett standing out.
Also, saw Tar. I can see people loving or thinking the movie is just absolutely pointless. I was more on the positive side. Cate Blanchett is great as always, I hope she doesn’t steal Best Actress away from Michelle Yeoh.Originally posted by G PericoIf I ain't got it, then I gotta take it

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Given that I didn't like the film either, considering it one of the top ten of the year would be a farcry. Hell, it wasn't even the best comic book movie of the year, and I'm not judging just by comic book standards.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

.
Especially these Marvel Movies. I take them for what they are and that’s simply movies based on Comic Books because that’s what they are, which is also why I keep expectations for them realll low. Like I’m not(not saying anyone here is so relax) expecting Denzel-esq performances or for these movies to be compared/ranked up there with some of the classic movies that have dropped(The Godfather, Forrest Gump, Heat, etc).
Like I feel like for most people and myself included, there’s a reason(s) why the first one was so acclaimed and got the accolades/hype that it got:
-Released during BHM
-Majority Black Cast
-Wasn’t your stereotypical “Struggling Youth makes it out of the Ghetto and is successful” film
-Or your typical “Action Cop/Drug Dealer
-A Black Superhero Film that EVERYONE could actually enjoy and watch as a Family.
-A dope soundtrack
I don’t think it was best one that year(I go with Infinity War. Didn’t care for Spiderverse at all)but when I see people act like the first one didn’t deserve the attention it received at the time, I look at them funny. But like you said, nominations are weird because we’ve seen way worse BS get nominated and win awards when the movie was about two pieces of bread just floating in the wind and dassit(obviously not that extreme but you get my point)
As for this movie, I thought they did as a good job a movie could do to honor losing the real life actor. Do I think they could’ve recast the role? Sure because it ain’t like they need someone to play Malcolm X or Fred Hampton. It’s a comic book movie at the end of the day, but I didn’t lose sleep or care too much about them moving on with it.
I’ve also accepted Marvel moves being unnecessarily long years ago because most of them are(see Endgame as the most recent example prior to this)so the length(pause)didn’t phase me either. There were definitely some moments where they dragged it out too.
I’ll probably go see it again just because my first viewing of a new movie is just being in the moment and just enjoying it, so the 2nd viewing I can actually watch and have more “thorough” review of it but I’d rank it similar to you.#RespectTheCultureComment
