Jay Illestrate - Science of the Times

The Zshare file hosting providing website had been shut down many few years ago. The new zShare website is a news blog that publishes the latest trending news on the web. So what happened to the old Zshare? As the new owner of the domain zshare.net, I honestly don’t know. The domain had not been

Cool stuff. I like what you were trying to do with this album bring the hazy, eerie and eclectic vibe, 3rdAnswer. My only gripe is that a few of the tracks sound a little raw and probably could be cleaned up in some areas. Or maybe that was the type of sound and style you were aiming to achieve in the first place (slightly distorted basslines, grainy breakbeats, etc.), so I don't know. For a couple examples of what I mean, although I like "Dojo Symphony" the way it is, it can sound really ill with a little more fine-tuning and revision. Same for the hypnotic "Buddah Break 2" if the bassline is toned down a bit. Conversely, I think the raw type of sound works just fine for "Dim Sunlight."

Anyway, the beats on this album reminds me of some from Jamiroquai, but you're not really imitating his work. (No one can... LOL!) A little funk, jazz, some soul, plus a pinch of current-generation techno to go along with tried-and-true hip-hop elements. My favorite joints are "Gentle Kung Fu," "High Jazz" (not the 'Exotic' one), "Ours The R" (even though it sounds a little out of place on this album, heh) and the aforementioned "Dojo Symphony" and "Buddah Break 2."

Keep it up with the eclectic stuff, 3rdAnswer. I really like chilling out listening to instrumental albums mixed with various music genres.

I like it. I agree that it needs some cleaning up. Some of the loops aren't as clean. But I like it.

Did you get a new drum kit?

I didn't really get a new drum set altogether, but I tried to twist up some of my drums to give them that dirty, Wu-Tang, un-polished sound.

That's exactly what I was going for with this entire album. I went back and really studied a lot of RZA's instrumental, and I guess you could say that this is the result of that.

Thanks for listening fellas. Would you guys be at all interested in me telling you what I sampled for each song?

I love grainy. I think it gives the beat more than if it ain't there imo.

I see. Some of the tracks on this album did seem to be inspired by early- to mid-'90s RZA and also of DJ Muggs. Nothing wrong with that as they're among the greatest hip-hop producers that has ever done it. Both are living legends at their craft.

And yeah, I would be interested to know what you sampled for each song if you don't mind revealing that information.

Gentle Kung Fu - "Black Cat" by Gentle Giants
Dojo Symphony - "Let Me Down Easy" by Betty Lavette
Tripped Out Fair Grounds - "T Plays it Cool" by Marvin Gaye
That Good Ish - "Tell Me Something Good" by Rufus
Dim Sunlight - "Tender Things" by Bill Withers

Those are just a few of the songs that I sampled to get my main loops. My drums and bells and whatnot come from a whole bunch of different songs.

                  Thanks for the info.

Is that the use of a congo drum or some other percussion instrument that I hear on "Chrono Thriller?" Intriguing track. Reminds me of the jungle drums that Large Professor used on a track from his 1st Class album.

"Gentle Kung Fu" is straight dopeness. Probably the best overall track on the album in my opinion despite it being a rather conventional mix without much risk-taking. "High Jazz" and "Buddah Break 2" are the best mellowed-out joints.

Honorable mention goes to "Dojo Symphony" though, because this one could be by far the illest because it's a daring/adventurous mix and has flashes of greatness. But it's a bit too rough around the edges to be rated the best overall.

Heh, and "Funky Dreams" sounds like it can make for a good outro to this album.
