Ever dropped a camera in water?

To make a long story short, I went on vacation and like an idiot put my non-water proof camera in my pocket before I went (hold your laughter please)...kayaking.

The kayak wasn't getting splashed with water or anything. It's just the fact that before we sat in it, the guy placed water in the seat area before we sat down. And my camera was soaking for a good 5 minutes before I realized it.

I can blame it on the a..a...a...alcohol. But it was me really not thinking before I went in.

Anyone ever get a non-water proof camera back working again after it got drenched in water? The camera seems shot right now. Battery (which was in it at the time) charges but the camera just doesn't turn on. And I can't figure out if the memory card still works because you have to have the memory card inside the camera and then connect the camera to your PC via USB cord but it simply does not read the camera at all.

Sucks big time, but I'm hoping a techie here can give me some good news or let me know what I can do.

You can let it dry, blow dry it, etc. You probably ruined all hope though by trying to turn it on and by hooking it up without it being totally dry. The memory card should be fine, but you will need to get a card reader or something that you can put the card in and then transfer the pictures.

Try taking it apart if possible, at least the outer case and see if you can dry it completely. Then try it out and see what happens.

Nope, closest thing to that i've done is get dumped on with a whole bunch of water while wearing my hearing aids. They weren't waterproof and I immediately had to turn them off and dry them. Luckily there was no damage.

My girlfriend accidentally dropped the camera I bought for her in her cup of beer. It was only a week after she received it too. We had to send it in to get fixed. Girls, booze, and electronics do not mix well.

Not always, but I'm probably thinking about a different kind of electronics....something more in the video camera range.

Took the memory card to a photo shop today and all the pics were saved which was my biggest concern actually.

Now just have to find out if the camera itself can be saved or if I'll need to buy a new one. I bought the camera about a month ago.
