Re: Large HDTV vs HD projector?
I probably can't go above 5k in Aussie dollars which is just over 4k in US dollars but that has to pay for the tv/projector (and screen) as well as the surround sound.
I've always skimped on the audio side of things in the past but after seeing the huge difference quality sound can make at a friends place i'm wanting good surround sound as well.
Do you think that would be enough?Comment

$1,000 for TV (if you decide to do both)
$1,500 for projector
$500 for projector accessories (quality screen, ceiling mount, cables)
$1000 for surrround sound
Of course, you could go a lot lower than that with careful planning.Last edited by GAMEC0CK2002; 06-09-2009, 07:58 PM.Comment

If your gonna go Blu Ray, get yourself a PS3. You get a Blu Ray Player & a gaming console.
As for a receiver get yourself a receiver that accepts HDMI Audio & Video.
As for speakers. I'm not an expert, but I think 1k should get you a nice 5 or 7.1 speaker set-up
Leaving the display as your final purchase.Comment

I believe 5k should get you a nice HT Experience. Here are some tips:

Thanks for the tips regarding the sound, i really have very little clue as to what is the best option in that regard so i'll still have plenty of research to do.Comment

Already got a ps3 and love it, just need to start buying blu rays rather than regular dvd's (hopefully they will start dropping in price).

In terms of your surround sound, do not get a HTIB (home theater in a box). Since you have a PS3, you can get a HDMI receiver that lets the PS3 decode the lossless audio. (Can save you $100-200)
The following link would be a good place to start your research. The information is reliable and up to date. Good luck. http://forums.highdefdigest.com/home...400-800-a.htmlComment

Amazon.com is the most consistent for cheaper blu rays. I have 150 of them and haven't paid more than $16 for any of them. Best Buy has a nice sale every now and then...last week they had Boondock Saints for $13.

I have to pay some pretty big international shipping costs to get blu ray's from Amazon because i live in Australia but if i ordered a bunch of them the saving would be worth it.
A friend of mine uses his ps3 as a media centre which seems pretty cool, i'll have to look into that more closely as well.Comment

Re: Large HDTV vs HD projector?
One of our local electronics chain's here is having a pretty sweet deal at the moment: Buy any Sony tv 40' or larger and you get a free 80gig ps3.
They have a 100Hz model and a 200Hz model Bravia, is there going to be much difference in picture quality of the two? From what i have seen the higher the HZ number the better the tv deals with fast moving images like sports and videogames so i'm assuming the higher the better right?Comment

There's no straightforward answer to your question. In certain panning scenes, we do see slight differences in motion fluidity between 100Hz and 200Hz HDTVs. Most of the time, however, there's a negligible improvement between the two. If you have budget constraints, we would suggest you settle with a 100Hz model. Such panels are getting increasingly common and affordable nowadays.
There's also the question of personal tolerance to motion blur and judder. Some consumers are pretty particular when it comes to these artifacts, while there are also videophiles who call the same experience film-like.Comment

I buy my Blu Rays from Ebay. Put in keywords "Blu Ray Lot" All mine were new. Got 20 for $150 shipped, some nice box sets and newer movies worth getting in HD rather than DVD. That was the best deal but usually pay $12 or less.Comment
