So I wanna learn web design...where should I start?

Alright. It's hard enough trying to get a job these days but one thing that I've noticed through various postings on the internet is that people seem to always want webpages done. As a college student, if I couldn't hold a full-time job, I could always do this on the side.

Unfortunately, we don't have any classes that teach web design. If we do it's a higher level course that requires pre-requisites outside of my major. So I'm wondering, where should I start?

I started reading an e-book when I was still in school on CSS. Should I start with HTML instead? Or does it matter? Any recommendations on the material?

www.htmlgoodies.com is a nice starter. I'd also recommend getting your hands on a copy of Dreamweaver (however you go about that) and the book that goes along with it.

Thanks for the link. I have a copy of Dreamweaver already. The book I was reading on CSS goes right with it.

CSS, HTML, and Dreamweaver will be a good start, you can have some sites up fast.

If you want to get into actual "design" then you'll need Photoshop or some other paint program you can use to create the look of a site. I personally suck at that aspect, but I'm a developer who does all the crazy back-end stuff (databases, e-commerce, etc), so we have creative people design the sites.

The advice given is good. I took Web Development I last semester (got an A) but I've learned far more messing around on my own. Practicing outside my homework made the class a piece of cake. It's going to make my next two web development related classes this fall much easier as well.

Since this in my "minor" at the community college I'm at, I try to do as much on the side as I can. You are correct that these jobs are in demand.

          Good luck and have fun.

The Vandelay site has links on the left and you can get lost in some of the tutorials and stuff from the other sites.

I think you should learn HTML before you learn CSS.
