    Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland

Walt Disney Pictures has released the first promotional photos from Tim Burton’s 3D re-imagining of Alice in Wonderland. Above you can see the first official photo of Johnny Depp as a freakish looking Mad Hatter, Helena Bona Carter as the Red Queen (”Off With Their Heads”), and Anne Hathaway as the very pale-looking The White Queen. After the jump we’ve included newly confirmed details about the films plot (did you know its a kind of a sequel?) and concept art that shows the White Rabbit (Michael Sheen), the egg-shaped Tweedledee and Tweedledum (Matt Lucas) and more.

The USA Today article where the images made their grand premiere, confirms our previous report that the film is actually a sequel to the original story in some ways. The movie begins at a party held at a Victorian estate where Alice, now 17, finds out they she is about to be proposed to in front of hundreds of snooty high society types and makes a run for it. Of course, she ends up following a white rabbit down a hold, back to Wonderland, a place where she visited a decade prior. The White Rabbit is convinced he has the right girl but Alice doesn’t remember he past visit to Wonderland. The creatures of Wonderland are ready to revolt and are hoping/waiting for Alice to help them.

Other details revealed in the article include: The Red Queen has a moat filled with bobbing noggins, The White Queen is beautiful but eccentric, and floats around instead of walking, and Johnny Depp employs an accent for the Hatter that producer Richard Zanuck can only describe as “indescribable”.

I’ve seen most of this art before at previous Disney industry events, and as I’ve stated in the past, I’m loving the Burton-styled look. I know some people will complain that this film looks too dark, but I actually wish some of it was darker. I’m not sure what to think about Depp of Carter’s digitally enhanced appearances. It will be interesting to see what they look like in motion. Head on over to USA Today to see non-cropped, much higher resolution versions of the above concept art. Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland will hit theaters on March 5th 2010.

That looks great. I'm all for a darker Alice in Wonderland as well.

This looks sweet. Surprised that it will be as dark as it is with Disney backing it again, but hopefully they don't candy up Tim Burton too much. Depp with a crazy accent in another role he probably dreamed about as a kid should be fun. Love the art style of Burton's movies, and this mix of live action/CGI/3D should be a great format for him... screens look awesome.

USA Today is wrong or the story continues to get screwed up by people.

It isn't the Red Queen that says "Off with their heads;" It's the Queen of Hearts. Both two very different queens in the world of Alice in Wonderland.

I'm still looking forward to this. I actually just purchased both Alice in Wonderland and Through The Looking Glass in the mail from B&N. Been wanting to read the story the way it was written and not the way Disney wrote it.

Anyway, a darker version of Alice in Wonderland was necessary in this world. It's a dark story that is often made too childish for folks.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

"You'll not find more penny-wise/pound-foolish behavior than in Major League Baseball." - Rob Neyer

The same can be said for pretty much every fairytale brought to the big screen. Maybe this will help launch a new genre or trend in which studios revisit these old fables but give us something a bit truer to the original intent.

I would love for that to happen.

Yet there's supposed to be a movie and sequel (in game form) to American McGee's Alice.

Agreed. I would like to see a more darker Wizard of Oz. I can't wait for this movie.

                    Looks GREAT!

I love Tim Burton, and much prefer his version of Wonka to the Gene Wilder one (heresy I know).

Still...for those looking for a "darker Wizard of Oz", just peep "Return to Oz" with the Wheelers.

[granted, a modern day, non-musical Oz would kick some major ***]

You're not the only one, I thought it was much better than the first. Actually I didn't even like the first one, even as a kid.
