    Is Motion-Capture obsolete?

Have we reached the point where motion-capture is no longer viable in a 3D gaming environment?

Is it now up to 3D model artists and 3D model animators to do the jobs themselves?

I know motion-capture saves a lot of time, but sometimes I wonder if models and movement in games might look better using actual physics and programmed animations as opposed to queued-up motion-captured animations.

Just curious. I don't know much about the technical side of things.

Well it stills does the job. But we are getting to a age of technology where people are expecting more realism then just 3d anymore. So it will come a time when the DEV team will have to go to new Technology to make the game more real looking then it is now.

How can you have custom animations for specific players with out motion capture????

It definitely should be, but a lack of system RAM and funding (small projects like backbreaker) are holding true physics back. Maybe it will be in for next gen, but I doubt it will be in for Madden as the game usually isn't on the cutting edge of technology.

The days of letting an average Joe or talentless wannabe player do the mocaps are over with. The actual technology is still viable. I think with actual NFL players or recently retired players and a bigger facility, they'd be just fine.

Although, I think it's kinda hard to simulate some of those moves without really being in a "live" environment. The guys prolly over think their movements because in contrast, on the field it's all reaction.

                Re: Is Motion-Capture obsolete?

When people are motion-captured, is there a limit to how many frames per second can be captured?

How many frames-per-second does a typical motion-capture take in?

                30? 60? 120?

Seems like there is some sort limitation in it, because not all motion-capped animations look smooth or fluid to me. In fact, some look choppy - like suddenly an elbow goes from down to up in less then a second... where was the upward movement in-between?

That has nothing to do with the capture. The capture is super accurate. When the movements are converted into an animation to be put in the game they are compressed and must work within the engine's specifications. That's why they'd look less than fluid.

Show me a sports video game that does not use motion capture, and I'll say motion capture is obsolete.

A captured animation can be further tweaked by animators, why not use it get skip the initial (probably longest) phase of animation?

The first kind is wrong. The second is superfluous.

Ian addressed this in a video interview once. He explained it from his point of view pretty well. But I have no clue what interview that was.

Basically, No its not obsolete. Not for awhile.

Because the T stands for technology, and motion-capture is technology. Where should it belong? And i am assuming this started in the madden forum.

If the motion capture can handle it, I don't know why they don't have a bunch of guys play a game. Motion capture everything and you should get most of the things that happen in a real game.
