Thanks, I had no Idea, but I saw that and I was thinking what the hell does that mean. I was never big Jackson fan. I think he had an amazing voice and I liked a lot of his songs, but being a rocker. Jackson just did not fly with me and my crowd. Any ways I feel for his family and kids. And all the people that are hurting, becasue they feel like a little bit of them died too. RIP G.O.A.T Michael.

Yeah I was 17 and remember it very well. I was a headbanger like most and usually only went to the metal concerts with the likes of Iron Maiden, KISS, Scorpions,Van Halen, but i've always said my favorite was easily that night at Cleveland Municipal Stadium...no one entertained like MJ.

Two icons from my childhood in one day...damn.

Re: Michael Jackson has passed away

I haven't been able to really stop thinking about this since it broke. I wasn't really a huge MJ fan and I pretty much was only familiar with his more popular works and some of the other "greatest hits", but I'm still depressed about this. I'm not as old as some of you so I wasn't around at what may have been his "pinnacle" but he was still one of the most popular and recognizable figures in pop culture in my lifetime. And I know he had his problems, but after actually thinking over his life and the fact he's never been allowed to be normal, it was saddened me to think that he may not have been too mentally sound. And so all of this combined with today has just hit me harder than I would've expected.

And I know it's minor in the whole scheme of things, but the O2 Arena in London is screwed:
AEG Live, the company that persuaded Michael Jackson to sign up for 50 nights at the O2 arena, is facing a liability of up to £300 million and a dark house for the next nine months.

It was Randy Phillips, head of the US entertainment company that turned the derelict former Dome into the UK’s most popular new arena, who persuaded Jackson to return for a stunning series of “farewell” concerts, beginning next month

RIP, there really aren't any words that could ever truly come close to describing what his music meant to the world and myself. Billy Jean and Thriller are the first songs I ever remember hearing and really knowing as a child.. very very sad day for me

This news crashed TMZ, The LA Times and Twitter websites. Shows you how popular he was.

Growing up every household around my way had plastic on the furniture, an afro pick somewhere lying around, the Bible , Ebony and/or Jet magazine, and at least two Michael Jackson records. That was like standard issue

Re: Michael Jackson has passed away

Andrew Sullivan sums up my thoughts today:

There are two things to say about him. He was a musical genius; and he was an abused child. By abuse, I do not mean sexual abuse; I mean he was used brutally and callously for money, and clearly imprisoned by a tyrannical father. He had no real childhood and spent much of his later life struggling to get one. He was spiritually and psychologically raped at a very early age - and never recovered. Watching him change his race, his age, and almost his gender, you saw a tortured soul seeking what the rest of us take for granted: a normal life.

But he had no compass to find one; no real friends to support and advise him; and money and fame imprisoned him in the delusions of narcissism and self-indulgence. Of course, he bears responsibility for his bizarre life. But the damage done to him by his own family and then by all those motivated more by money and power than by faith and love was irreparable in the end. He died a while ago. He remained for so long a walking human shell.

I loved his music. His young voice was almost a miracle, his poise in retrospect eery, his joy, tempered by pain, often unbearably uplifting. He made the greatest music video of all time; and he made some of the greatest records of all time. He was everything our culture worships; and yet he was obviously desperately unhappy, tortured, afraid and alone.

I grieve for him; but I also grieve for the culture that created and destroyed him. That culture is ours' and it is a lethal and brutal one: with fame and celebrity as its core values, with money as its sole motive, it chewed this child up and spat him out.

I hope he has the peace now he never had in his life. And I pray that such genius will not be so abused again.

Re: Michael Jackson has passed away

My wife woke me up this morning - asking me "Did you hear about Michael Jackson?!?". I watched some news last night and saw that he had some issues with his heart but didn't think it was that serious. So I was half-asleep and then my wife said: "Michael Jackson is dead!"... and I'm like WTF?!! It's shocking, even more when you're not up yet...
I gotta say that I didn't really like the guy. I liked the Jacksons' music, and some of Michael's 80's songs, but during the last 12-15 years he's always been on the news because of negative issues. Now he can finally rest.

                        RIP

Best entertainer ever. Iconic like Elvis. Trendsetting like the Beatles. Visually stimulating like James Brown. Polished like the Temptations. Artistic genius like Prince. The. Best. Ever.

I mourn the artist. You can't help but think he could have done even more if he hadn't allowed himself to become Wacko Jacko. What he accomplished was still more world shattering than anyone else.

It was because of his crazy father that pushed him to become wacko jacko and that is the man that should pay for damaging all those kids, especially Michael. Just sad to think how certain damages in someone's childhood could really ruin them as adults.
