Pro tip: Don't read reviews on things you already know you like before you've watched/played/listened/etc.

I didn't read anything. The best part to me was Abed's meta-spoofing of the show inside his head. The worst part was the fountain scene with Britta and Troy. I cringed.

Same here. There was nothing really bad to say, it didn't seem completely different in any way, it just wasn't as funny. Maybe it's the movie trailer effect, they showed so much of the episode as promos that when the episode finally aired it cut half of the humor out of the show?

I'm sure there were people who were going to hate it no matter what, but people who didn't like it can't just be painted as Dan Harmon fanboys.

I enjoyed it and laughed at several of the jokes, but I thought everything seemed a bit off, and definitely "not the exact same." In particular, Community has always been fantastic at how specific their parodies got while still allowing them to be fresh and unique, like the specific references in the Apollo 13 parody juxtaposed against the fact that the characters are in a KFC rocket ship.

Here, however, the "Hungerdeans" didn't say anything about the Hunger Games, and other than the title and the dean's wardrobe bore no relation to the books or movie. So what we got was a Hunger Games parody that wasn't actually a Hunger Games parody, or a parody of anything for that matter. It was just a bunch of athletic challenges and a dance competition. Yes, there were some good jokes (Pierce trying to figure out a joke involving the red balls and Jeff doing the tango with Dean Pelton), but it all felt hollow to me in comparison with what the show has done before.

This was only one episode, and you can't judge an entire season on one episode alone, but I couldn't help but think that the "Hungerdeans" would have felt less hollow if Dan Harmon were still in charge.

Still, if the rest of the season is of this quality, I will happily watch the show and hope for a 5th season, as I still enjoyed the episode and laughed so hard I had to hit pause when the dean got upset that somebody moved his stapler.

I don't think everyone who didn't like it was a Dan Harmon fanatic, but I do think a lot of them were. Just to be clear, I love Dan Harmon. The fact that he created this show and then his AMAs on reddit pouring his heart out to the community really show that he cares about the show. But just because he's gone doesn't inherently make the show bad is all I'm saying. I'm a Dan Harmon fan, and I'll be a fan of anything he comes out with, but I'm a Community fan first.

Found this on reddit, something from the writers to the fans put in the episode:

                        Re: Community

I thought it was an okay episode. I laughed a few times, but then again I was tired and half delerious when I watched it.

I'm not sure exactly what they were going for with the episode.. the Dean was a bit of an overkill this episode. Using the word dean as replacement is funny, but only in moderation.

The Britta/Troy fountain scene just made me roll my eyes.. it was a little much.

Outside of that, I don't really have any complaints. I hope this episode isn't an indication as to the direction this season will be going. Hopefully we will know more after next week's episode.

If we didn't know Harmon was gone, would we all be looking at the show in the same light we are now ? I feel like I'm looking for more stuff to critique now.

To all those who think the show will go way down hill without Harmon, remember this: the first half of the third season (with Harmon in charge) wasn't all that good at all. It's not like everything the man touches turns to gold.

The first half of the third season had Remedial Chaos Theory, arguably the best episode in the entire run of the series, Documentary Filmmaking: Redux with the Dean's meltdown, and Regional Holiday Music, also arguably one of the best in the entire run of the series.

Not to mention Horror Fiction in Seven Spooky Steps, Studies in Modern Movement, and the foosball episode, which were all pretty darn good in their own right.

The only episode that I'd put in the "not good" category was Advanced Gay, honestly. The rest range from good to fantastic.

I'll give you Chaos Theory (I don't think it was anywhere near the best episode in the series, or even the season, but it was good). But I thought the rest of those weren't really all that great. They'd have some funny moments, but the storytelling took a definite downward turn in season 3, imo, and didn't pick up again until the last few episodes.

Had no clue who Harmon was until I checked the last 2 pages. Thought this episode was decent. Not the best, not bad, but good enough. Just waiting patiently for the great ones.
