    Got a tv question...

Ok I'm contemplating my next tv purchase, already have a fairly crappy 37" 720p sharp and gaming is a big issue for me.

Now the question is...If burn-in is no longer really an issue with plasmas, and they have the best color, deepest blacks, no motion blur etc.....why would anyone get an lcd? Plus plasmas are much cheaper. I can get 46-50" plasmas for the price of some 37-42" lcds.

Anyone care to help me understand?

    Thanks

When we were TV shopping late last year, plasmas clearly were pricier. If that's changed, it might be a matter of shelf life.

Maybe things have changed but when I bought my 42" lcd about a month or two ago, plasmas were more expensive then lcds.

based off of amazon and best buy, plasmas are cheaper. Just a couple of random ones for example.

        heres a 46" samsung lcd for $1,484.00 http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-LN46B6...7774836&sr=1-7

        heres a 50" samsung plasma for $1239.00 http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-PN50B5...7774941&sr=8-2

I've been following TV tech for several years, and I really don't understand why LCDs took over the majority of the market share. Unless your tv is going to be facing a wall of windows or you will be using the screen as a computer monitor, I don't know why you'd pick an LCD if your looking at 42" and over.

If that's changed, it might be a matter of shelf life.
Both LCDs and Plasmas these days are rated at 100,000 hours. Shelf life isn't an issue for either technology.

You can get a 42" Panasonic Plasma for $650(720p). I've seen them as low as $599. Unless space is an issue, I really don't understand why someone would pick an LCD when the LCDs at that price point can't touch plasma.

In general, at any given price point, you will be able to get a plasma that will out perform a similarly priced LCD.

Thats what I was wondering myself. Its like they are shoving LCD's down everyone's throat and I just didn't really understand it nowadays. Thought maybe I was missing something.

I don't understand it either. You can get a 32 inch LCD from Sony, Samsung for $600 but you can get a 42 inch Panasonic plasma for the same amount.

Not to mention plasmas are best for watching movies.

To be fair, most comparisons are between a 1080p LCD vs. a 720p plasma. (Under 50inches, 720p is fine provided you aren't sitting super close to your tv)

I chose a 1080p LCD over plasma because of the energy consumption and when I purchased lcds were slightly cheaper as well. Plasmas run much hotter and use more energy. My electric bill is high enough as it is.

I seriously doubt that your electric bill will change much due to having a plasma vs. a lcd.

This is the only big thing holding me back from getting the panny 42x1 (power consumption and heat in an already hot basement). You will find a review here or there that says my electricity bill has jumped, but for every one of those I've found, there are another 10 saying my bill didn't change at all.

BTW, the prices at amazon aren't listed because they are too low, but I've had one in my cart and it keeps lowering the price. Down to about 635 at the moment, in case anyone is interested.
