Re: Inspired By Bill Simmons: The DEFINING Movie Of This Decade?
The Harry Potter franchise.
Think of it this way, it's based on another property, (books) it's a tentpole, (tons of sequels) lots of SFX and action and lastly it's everything a blockbuster should be.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Probably the Lord of the Rings movies as a whole - the fact Jackson managed to pull off what he did is simply unbelievable.Comment

Longhorn brings up a good question... what exactly are we "defining"?
The Dark Knight stands alone as the best superhero movie in a 10 year span where superhero movies were very prevalent. It was also very stylized, used great visual effects, was based in the 2000's, used many relevant actors and appealed to almost all groups of people.
Movies like LotR (I don't enjoy fantasy movies), There Will Be Blood (boring to many, I loved it), and No Country For Old Men (same as TWBBlood) were not able to span generational gaps as The Dark Knight was able to. Everyone I talked to loved that movie.
Other movies that I really think were great were City of God and The Departed. The Departed was probably Scorcese's best film and was another movie that took place in the modern day.Comment

Re: Inspired By Bill Simmons: The DEFINING Movie Of This Decade?
Does it matter?
Return of the King is #1 in awards, #1 in money, and essentially tied for #1 in IMDB rating.
City of God is clearly the best movie of the 00s, but a film in Portuguese can't be the pick. There'd be anarchy.Comment

Re: Inspired By Bill Simmons: The DEFINING Movie Of This Decade?
TDK is my favorite movie of all time. I loved everything about that movie. However, the LOTR series, to me, is an amazing accomplishment in every sense. Like Cebby said, LOTR is on top in terms of money, awards, fans and critic reception, etc. It's a huge accomplishment and I thought they were great movies. Thought they did a wonderful job of doing the books justice. I'd go with the LOTR movies.Comment
