    Oprhan (film)

The Orphan is in theaters Friday July 24, 2009.

The trailers all warn that there is something wrong with Esther and that you'll never guess what it is.

So, what do you think is wrong with Esther?

*If you've read spoilers or seen the movie, please keep it in spoilers. We're just guessing here.

Also, feel free to discuss the film.

Personally, I think it's going to be similar to Godsend - a decent horror film but nothing extremely special.

The basic plot is that the parents just lost an unborn child and faced with the pain of that loss decide to adopt. They are immediately attracted to the shy, quiet Esther and adopt her from the orphanage. Esther ends up being the complete opposite of that shy, quiet girl and the mother is convinced something is wrong with her.

So what's wrong with Esther? My guess is that it isn't her being that unborn child. That was already done with this year's The Unborn. She also isn't the child of the devil. That's just way too corny and overdone. If it's that then the movie will suck.

I'm assuming that you really can't guess what exactly is wrong with her until more information is revealed in the plot.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Perhaps Esther isn't really a child. She seems to dress old fashioned so she's probably been alive for a long enough time.

She travels around to different orphanages to be adopted and then kills the family. That's the regular ol' thriller bit right there.

If they want it to be more of a horror film then maybe she's the mother's unborn sister or some crazy nonsense like that.

    edit:

Removed theories that were apparently spoilers.

Some interesting theories I've seen online:

After watching the trailer I suspect that her creepy little secret is that she isn't a child. She's got one of those Webster/GaryColemen kidney diseases which cause her remain a prepubescent little girl....FOREVERmoohoohaha. Oh, and also she's a homicidal maniac.

I think cuz of the old clothes she died years ago, and the dog coller/ribbon, well thats proberly covering how she was killed like her neck being slit or she was hanged.

My theory was just a theory. I posted (italics) other theories I read that supported my thoughts.

If she is all of the things I guessed then I never intended them to be spoilers. I was merely guessing based on her attire.

I'm tired of the stupid trailer. I know there's something wrong with Esther, just shut up about it!

I'll probably rent this on DVD, seems kinda interesting overall...

I haven't seen the preview much. I saw the preview in theaters and maybe a handful of times on television. I had no idea it was releasing tomorrow. I just happened to see an ad on a site and remembered that I was curious to know what was wrong with Esther.

They're not spoilers unless you point them out as such. Otherwise, they were just educated guesses and there's no point in people making guesses if they have to be wrong.

                    My guess:

Someone killed her a very long time ago(hence the old-fashioned clothes), so now she kills people waiting to adopt her.

Has anybody actually seen this yet? I saw it tonight and liked for what it was. It was more of a suspense/thriller than a horror film (which is what the trailer made it out to be, IMO). The movie did some nice twists with building fake suspense throughout, which made it somewhat unique in that aspect. The girl who played Esther did an awesome job.

I have not, but I still want to. I figured it would be more suspense/thriller than horror.

And thrillers tend to be my favorite films.
