Pretty much sums it up for me. For extra credit, try throwing it into a conversation.

Re: I finally know what "Pompatus of Love" now means, thank God!

        Basically:

        1. Steve Miller liked R&B
        2. He thought he heard the word in an old Medallions song called "The Letter"
        3. Medallions' member Vernon Green sang the song.
        4. Green heard the term mentioned on TV because Jon Cryer was making a movie of that name.
        5. Green called JC and explained that the word resembled more like "puppetutes" meaning "A term I coined to mean a secret paper-doll fantasy figure [thus puppet], who would be my everything and bear my children," said Green.

Miller's use sounds more like it's some type of creed of some such, but it seems like it really represents a fantasy girl/wife.

Later, after Green died, Rockin' Radio News stated:

Green's famous recitation on "The Letter" contained the nonsense lyric, "the pulpitudes of love," which was later picked up by Steve Miller as "the pompitudes of love"—which became the title of a 1990s film.

        Hey....what's not to get??

Still a pretty cool site..... now, I'm off to understand what the hell Hotel California is all about!

Haha I mean I comprehended what was said in the article, but there wasn't a clear-cut definition on the term.

I promise I'm not cheating, but two years ago one of my floormates in my dorm said it was actually about Hotel del Coronado in San Diego. She said more that I forget, but that's the basic premise.

Hotel California is about the lure of showbiz, Hollywood, and fame.

What I meant was the name was based off Hotel del Coronado and not actually anything called Hotel California. It was written based off some experience there, not the actual hotel itself. I didn't really know how to explain what I meant.

Just like Jimmy Buffet's Cheeseburger in Paradise. It was based off a place that he went where he had one and wrote a song about... well... paradise (quite the contrary).

Deciphering songs is too good for me, though. I'm not quite at that level yet.

Well, let's keep in mind you're sometimes trying to figure out code from someone who devised something while influenced, intoxicated or otherwise laced! And if none of that, well then, they were being "artsy"!

Yeah, technically it's like Rorschach inkblot tests: make 'em however you want, decipher 'em however you want. I mean obviously there's normally just one intended meaning by the songwriter him or herself, but sometimes they are so open to interpretation (almost Shakespearinan in some ways) that we ourselves could do the same thing in songwriting. Again, I'm bad at being complex.

When I was in high school, me and a friend of mine were discussing the beatles and the different reasons why the real paul Mcartney died in a crash, and the current, then new, paul mcartney is a fake. Well, that convo went on for a while and then we started discussing the Hotel California, and we both came to the conclusion that the guest of the hotel is actually in his own version of hell, which doesn't appear to be hell at all at first glance.

It is like a Twilight zone episode I saw once, where a thug gets shot, wakes up in a hotel room and has a personal servant (played by the guy who played mr christian, the butler, on that old show family affair) who caters to his every desire, he never loses at the casino, he always wins at pool, he gets all the pretty woman. At first he thinks he is in heaven, but then he realizes that the thrill of losing, and the overall thrill of being a thug is gone he is bored to death...yada yada, he then realizes that he is in hell and that his servant was the devil. That is how I would explain hotel california, and I quote "this could be heaven or this could be hell".
