Re: Rappers That's Killing Hip-Hop
Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer had the two highest selling rap albums of the 1990s.
Obviously there was great music put out then, but pop music by and large has always been throw away catchy music.
Even the rappers you listed relied on generic hits to get play. All of Big's singles to my knowledge included a sing-songy hook (most by females), the only Wu singles were the 1-3 per album with a hook, and Bone-Thugs' big hit was... sing-songy-hook based.
Illmatic took 7 years to go platinum.
People always tend to overrate the past. While Wu and Nas put out probably my 6 favorite rap albums in the 90s (Illmatic OB4CL, Liquid Swords, Ironman, 36 Chambers, and IWW), the sale of all those combined don't reach Hammer Don't Hurt Em.
Outside of rap, Ace of Base had the highest selling album one year, another year Celine Deon carried the Titanic album to the highest sales, the Spice Girls, and the biggest single of the 90s was the ****ing Macarena.Last edited by Cebby; 08-07-2009, 09:46 PM.Comment

Re: Rappers That's Killing Hip-Hop
Did you not read my post?
What about Hammer or Vanilla Ice wasn't "commercialized"?
"Today's music" (whatever period that may be) is always more commercialized than it was in XXYY.Last edited by Cebby; 08-07-2009, 10:47 PM.Comment

Re: Rappers That's Killing Hip-Hop
I think we have to remember there was a time when like 90-95 percent of hip-hop was underground. BET and MTV only played them on specialized Rap shows. Nowadays they play them all the time so they need more commercial artists to justify it. And when things become more commercialzed, the quality tends to go downhill.follow me on twitter: www.twitter.com/eton_riflesComment

There ya go. If the majority didn't listen to and buy the music, then it wouldn't continue.
You can't blame the artists for being smart enough to record what the people clearly want.Comment
