    Symphonic Metal

Probably little known and may not be a popular choice, but I discovered this genre about a year ago on youtube and have been hooked. Every band that I know of is from Europe, but all lyrics are in English.

For anyone who doesn't know the genre basically takes melodies that you would probably associate with classical music and gives them a harder edge. Also the lyrics can sometimes be a little heavy.

The bands that I'm most familar with are
    Nighwish
    Krypteria
    Within Temptation

Any other fans of this genre?

I dunno. Does Stratovarius apply to this type? I love them and they are swedish and seem to sort of fit your description

      Re: Symphonic Metal

My understanding is that symphonic metal and power metal (like Stratovarius is classified as according to wiki) are often interchangeable terms. Power metal perhaps is slightly more fast paced, and symphonic metal bands normally have a female vocalist.

I tried listening to a few songs by stratovarius and they don't seem to be that dissimilar to the ones I'm familiar with.

Here are a few songs from the bands I listed above

      Krypteria - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jt8wxgfd77A
      Within Temptation - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZjco...eature=related

I really liked the latter two songs you posted. Very good stuff. Thanks for the info!

Another band I absolutely LOVE is Symphony X. However they may be harder then you like. But they have great harmony and melody.

Also, Trans-Siberian Orchestra is fantastic as well

I listen to it. You'd like Epica. They have a female lead.

I listen to it from time to time. Some other bands you may be interested in are:

              Leave's Eyes
              The Gathering
              Theatre of Tragedy
Lacuna Coil (they are not really symphonic, but Cristina Scabbia is smoking hot lol)

Oh yea and I agree with WDO, Symph X is awesome but more Power Metal than Symphonic imo.

Spellbound is the only song that I have heard by them that I thought was really any good. But your right, the female singer is a looker.

Yeah those 2 were originally my 2 favorite bands of the 3 but I've found a couple of Krypteria songs "Get the hell out of my way" and "you and I" which are amazing.

All 3 of harder and softer songs.

That symphony x song was pretty good too, but a few of their others were a little too chaotic.

I've heard a couple of their songs and liked them, but just haven't heard as many as some other bands.

Sirenia is another band like that

Yeah I really like Lacuna Coil, I'll have to check those other bands out.
