Jean Claude Van Damme Appreciation Thread

Like a lot of guys who grew up around the time I did, Jean Claude Van Damme's name rings bells. He's given us some jewels over the years like Bloodsport, Kickboxer, Lionheart, Double Impact, Death Warrant, etc. So I'm over here talking to a buddy on aim a bit ago and he's like, "what about No Retreat, No Surrender?" I had no idea what he was talking about, so he linked me to this.

    <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/lVPTzoNzMKM&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/lVPTzoNzMKM&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

I don't know how I missed this one but I must see it now. The cheesiness is killing me over here. This looks like one of the best movies ever lol.

While I'm on Van Damme, has anyone seen JCVD? I put it in my Netflix queue the other night, I'll have to watch it soon.

Cyborg was probably my favorite movie with him in it.

Saw No Retreat a while back on a Van Damme binge. He's golden as the antagonist but what a bad film lol.

Bloodsport is an 80s classic, its got everything.

Lol, No Retreat, No Surrender does look pretty epic. Don't know how I missed that. I knew it existed since I saw part 2 but never saw it for some reason.

Bloodsport and Cyborg were my two favorites. Man we used to think we were JCVD or somebody, trying to do the splits and stuff. Van Damme was the man.

JD needs to be permabanned for the blatant disrespect shown to Van Damme in his appreciation thread lol.

Just finished watching JCVD and it was a pretty cool flick. I found a torrent of No Retreat, No Surrender, and I'll try to peep that tomorrow night. I think I'm gonna make this a Van Damme weekend lol. Cyborg was hot, haven't seen that in a long time either.

Hell yeah! I've been waiting impatiently for Tony Jaa's next flick.

Also check out Jacky Wu Jing in Kill Zone and Fatal Contact. Dude has amazing quickness. I also recommend seeing the The Rebel starring Johnny Tri Nguyen, the guy who played the top henchman overlooking the restaurant in The Protector.

Anyway, Jean Claude Van Damme had a good thing going along with Steven Seagal... until highly-skilled Hong Kong action guys got many of their vintage movies stateside during the early- to mid-'90s. Then that was a wrap for both of them. I can't look at either of those guy's movies the same after watching so much movies from the likes of Jackie Chan, Jet Li and Donnie Yen over the years.

No retreat No surrender might be the cheesiest movie ever made.
I had to watch this piece of crap with my little cousin all the time when it first came out on VHS as he got it for his Bday one year. Oh the fight scenes the acting, make it stop! It is making my head hurnt just thinking about it.
By the way I once heard that JCVD was all fake that he wasnt really skilled in martial arts, is this true?
I did hear Seagal was skilled and was trained by one of the highest ranking martial artist ever.

Well, Van Damme is not fake, but he's not what I would call a highly-skilled martial artist either. Just go back and take a closer look at Van Damme's one-on-one fight scenes. It always took many different shots/angles just to capture a 5-second sequence of action in a typical fight scene from him. A shot captures one move from Van Damme then changes as the next move is about to start. You never see a single take which captures multiple moves that flows together like skilled martial arts action guys normally perform.

As for Seagal, he is certainly a highly-skilled martial artist. My issue with him was that he was never really challenged in any of his movies. He simply overpowered or just about overwhelmed anyone he faced in a matter of seconds unless he was disadvantaged or was severely handicapped. He hardly ever had any lengthy fights against a skilled opponent that would seriously test his endurance and stamina.
