    Copying DVD Question

So i was wondering about this question involving DVDs....I know you can put old video tapes and what not onto a DVD

but is it possible to copy a movie DVD onto your computer and then put it onto a DVD...im not talking about downloading a torrent movie but like buying a moive from best buy and then copying it on a blank DVD

if so what kind of programs or software would i need

Well my friend that would be highly illegal besides most, if not all retail DVDs are copy protected and are dual layer DVDs to boot. You'd have to get software that breaks the CP and buy dual layer blanks.

IMO it's not worth the hassle and again it's illegal.

To do specifically what he is asking is not illegal...you have a right to create a backup of your own personal copy. I make copies of all my kids DVD's, my daughter would have destroyed half of her disks by now if I allowed her to use them instead of a copy, plus losing one on vacation is no big deal.

To the OP...just go to doom9.org, you will find all you need to know there about how to make your own backups, your own movies...etc.

It is perfectly legal to create backup copy for personal use to PRESERVE the original from damage or loss. But the key there is only one purchased copy is IN USE at a time. Copyright laws in the U.S prevent user from creating copies to share with friends and relatives. If media companies could have prevented VCR's or PVR's by copyright laws they would have, ultimately they would love it if you paid them something per viewing.

What I do though is have a media center. I record HD and save it to my server to watch via menu driven interface. I have taken all my DVD's and converted them to do that too. I never have to touch my DVD's, they go back on the shelf in their case and stay there. For vacations and my daughter's play room TV, I create copies that she can destroy or lose, because I can always create another copy since I OWN and protect the original.

doom9 or videohelp will show you the way, plenty of tutorials are available. The are free ways that have a bit of a learning curve, or commercial software that is super user friendly. But since this stuff skirts Piracy, most forums such as this like to keep this discussion off site. Which is why I always recommend Doom9, because that is what it is dedicated to.

I use a program called handbrake to copy my movies to my computer and then put them on my iphone. The program is legal you can find it by googeling handbrake. I dont know if you can burn back up dvd's with it, I would imagine you could like I said I just use to put my favorite movies on my Iphone.

DVDShrink may not be able to handle the most current movies encryption and apparently Handbrake can, but apparently you need to run it with a little catalyst program at the same time called DVD43. My limited experience with Handbrake showed that it took many hours to convert your DVD. DVDShrink should be attempted first imo as it would take only about 35 minutes to do a straight up back up, or if you want to, you can reauthor the disk and simply extract the main feature. You just have to watch that you don't accidentally extract the subtitles if you don't want them, or that's all you'll get is movie+subtitles. Shrink will then call upon Nero to copy the final product to disk.

I use handbrake and DVD43 to copy movies for my iphone and PS3 and haven't found it to take hours at all. I think the longest I have seen is about two hours.
