It seems like every game I have ever played online on my PC has a lot of lag. I always seem to lag a lot more than my opponents. Are there any simple steps I can take to try and reduce the lag? Its to the point where there really isnt any reason for me to play games online anymore because of it. I have comcast high speed internet so its not like I'm playing on dial-up or something.

What are the specs of your computer? Are you behind a router or firewall? If so do you have your ports configured properly? Are you on a wireless network? If so, are you sure no one is piggybacking off your connection?PS: You guys are great.

I'm not exactly sure what my specs are. I think my ports are configured correctly. I'm not on a wireless network, and I highly doubt that anyone is piggybacking off my connection.
I think one of the problems could be that I might have too many unnecessary programs running at once. Could that cause a lot of slow down?Comment

Unnecessary apps running in the background could be one of the main culprits in your struggles. Run "EndItAll" (a stand alone app; attached here). Also go into your task manager (ctrl+alt+del) and check what is hogging up your mem usage and vm size. If it's unnecessary, shut it down.Comment

Also run MSCONFIG (im assuming you have XP) and go into the startup tab and uncheck anything unnessaceryComment
