Can PS3 games cause problems on a plasma?

The reason I ask is this. I've got a 50" plasma, and I'm noticing that when the screen is black, there are often little red/pink dots that flicker on the screen, usually around the top corners mostly. It's not glaringly obvious, and you don't see it anytime there's an actual color image on the screen. I now also have a very thin purple line that runs directly down the middle of the screen (!). Thankfully, it's not noticeable most of the time, but when the screen down the middle is showing a light colored image, it can get pretty obvious.

Is this all just traced back to a defective set (almost 3 years old, so no, it's not warrantied)? Or could the PS3 gaming have any effect on the life of the TV? These are issues that I've only started noticing in the last 3 months.

You can get help if you post something like this in the ENTERTAINMENT AND TECHNOLOGY threads. There are a bunch of guys there that can help you with all kinds of stuff related to t.v.s/computers/etc.

Sparkles on a plasma are due to voltage shift, the voltage can be adjusted by a tech (or yourself if you can follow a tech manual).

Purple line, is this a Panasonic? Sounds like a common fault with the panels they had a few years back. Likely nothing much you can do about it now, i doubt Panasonic will do anything and it would cost more to fix than replace.

Nope, it's a Toshiba. I figured as much - just going to have to live with the line and thankfully most of the time it's not noticeable.

Thanks for the tip on the sparkling. I'll check the manual and see if I can correct for it.

You'll need a service manual, not the user manual (you actually likely don't need it anyway). Typically it involves taking the back off the TV and tuning a small pot on the power supply. Sometimes it happens in newer plasmas because of voltage shift from the panel settling, a 3 year old TV I'd say a part is failing (power supply or a circuit board).

You'll need a multimeter and knowledge of how to use it, if you have zero electronics knowledge I probably wouldn't suggest you try.
