Need some advice - buying a new TV

Recently hit a winner in a poker tournament and want to buy a new TV. I know very little about the latest technology but here's what I do know:

    - plan to spend ~$1k
    - will mostly be for TV/movies, not gaming
    - want a wall mount (I guess they're all like that)
    - want to buy at Target (discount)

Other than that, I'm pretty green.

Any help in what I should get would be appreciated...

Amazon.com has great prices on HDTVs as well. Panasonic plasmas under $600 with free shipping and no taxes among others.

Thanks for the help, guys, but this above is a key. I get a pretty good discount, so I'd like to stay "home."

        Any other suggestions?

You said tv/movies is main use so you'll likely want to go with a plasma. Natural skin colors and deeper blacks. I wouldn't let the 720p scare you off.

720p Panny plasma is currently $650 at Target.

If you go LCD, go straight to 1080p. From Target's limited selection I would go with either the 42 inch Vizio ($900) or the slightly smaller but higher rated 40 inch Sony Bravia ($800).

Wouldn't touch any of the other "budget" brands besides Vizio, IMHO.

Check out all 3 in store. Don't just go by a specs sheet. Good luck.

This. Also, since you said ~$1k it might be worth looking at the 47" Vizio or 50" Panasonic for an extra $100-$150. What I would suggest you do is take paper and mock up screen sizes on your wall where you plan to put the TV (or on another wall if you can't) and leave it there for a few days to see what size you like, you definitely can't tell any other way.

Also, for mounting, go to monoprice.com for the mount, if you get a big enough discount you might find one at target but don't spend more than about $45 total. They aren't very hard to do yourself either, you just might want to have someone there to help actually lift the tv to the wall plate. It's also not hard to run the wires through the wall.

Well I broke my 46'' Toshiba today moving back to Syracuse. Part of me is very pissed off that I broke it because i could have taken better care of it during the move, but part of me is happy because I get to buy a new TV! Either way, i am looking to spend around 1500, but I might jump up to 1800 for this TV: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16889102270

I am partial to Samsung now because My dad bought a new Samsung and the Picture is absolutely amazing. I have not seen a better picture on a TV for what he paid, this is his TV:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16889102286

Yeah, definitely go with monoprice for mounts, audio or video cables. Save you some serious money.

To the OP, how much of a discount do you receive if you don't mind me asking. My brother works part time at Kmart and only gets 10% off retail price.

Which 99% of the time is a smaller discount compared to Amazon's lower starting price, no taxes and free shipping.

Might want to consider a 50 inch Pioneer Kuro 1080p plasma. Don't think you'll find a better picture (unless you jump up to the Kuro Elite).

Top of the line 1080p Plasma trumps a Top of the line 1080p LCD....IMO

Re: Need some advice - buying a new TV

10% discount is pretty much standard at all retail stores unless you into upper levels of management, such as assistant manager or co-manager, then it would be higher.

Stay away from Plasma, I seen many a plasma tv returned due to burn out. But for $1,000 you can get yourself a good 46" or 47" tv, depending on the brand. Phillips, Sony and Samsung generally cost more. Vizio generally be $200 cheaper for the same size and same specs.

Far as well mount go, there are 3 types. Low profile, which mean they dont move at all. Tilt, which means they can be tilted up or down. Then you have full motion, which can tilt up/down and swivel from side to side. Full motion cost the most.

                      Burn out? Please clarify.

If you meant burn in, that is more a problem of someone being ridiculously careless. You'd have to be leaving a static image on in the Torch/Vivid mode for a long time for this to come into play.

Burn in is almost a non-issue when it comes to decent or better plasmas currently on the market. I doubt the same can be said for a cheap brand. Like anything else, you get what you pay for.

                          1. Go 1080p and get a blu ray player. If you want it for movies, you have to go 1080p.
                          2. How big of a discount at Target? Sites like Amazon and Newegg you don't have to pay taxes. So any discount will usually even out as you will pay $80+ in taxes at Target.

I know you want to go Target, but unless you get a 20% or better discount you won't be getting an amazing deal.

50" 1080 Panasonic - $979 No tax, no shipping fee. This TV is $1199 at Best Buy(before taxes)

As far as Mounts . MIGHT be able to find a better deal at Target.

Assuming his location is correct, Amazon charges sales tax for people in New York.
