Re: HBO's miniseries The Pacific
I think the character set up was pretty weak, but I like the action scenes far more than BoB.
Obviously this was a lot more ambitious than BoB by trying to cover the entire theater from every aspect which has definitely resulted in a lack of attachment to characters. Aside from Basilone and Snafu I don't like any of the characters. I can sympathize with Sledge but I feel that the huge focus on Leckie over the first 4-5 episodes was a complete waste of time.
Then again, I've only seen this once (and not even the whole series) whereas I've seen BoB a half dozen times.Comment

Re: HBO's miniseries The Pacific
Just finished up part 9...I keep thinking the prior episode is like none other, but wow was tonight's profoundly powerful. I just don't know what to say. All I know is when I see my grandfather soon, I will thank him for everything he did (he fought in the pacific theatre). I let myself get sucked in to whatever I watch, but I just can't imagine what they went through and that it is with them for the rest of their lives.Comment

Re: HBO's miniseries The Pacific
Part 9 was definitely my favorite, absolutely amazing episode.
Am I the only one who thinks Shelton (sledge's friend) is the creepiest guy ever? Throughout the series I've thought he's gonna kill a fellow soldier or be killed, since he's constantly making jokes in this weird, half-serious way. Creepy as hell. Especially a couple episodes ago when he was throwing rocks into the decapitated body of a Jap.Tomahawk Chopped - An FSU NCAA 11 Dynasty

Re: HBO's miniseries The Pacific
Part 9 was pretty graphic and pretty powerful. Really shows how difficult it was on the soliders and how war can change someone like Sledge so much.
I don't feel anywhere near the connection to the characters as I do with the ones in BoB, though. I guess that's just because they've bounced around so much. In BoB they followed one company, from training to the end of the war. In this series, they've bounced around with Basilone, Leckey (sp?), and Sledge. It's just tough to keep up with all of it and doesn't allow as much character connection.
Still really enjoying it, though.Comment

Re: HBO's miniseries The Pacific
The Pacific is really a good series, but I felt it could have been better. I know it's not like BoB (which was epic), but the characters didn't make me want to keep watching.
Plus, I enjoy knowing/watching more about the war in Europe. Great minds were in Europe. The war in the Pacific was more bloodshed and unethical.Comment

The Germans were committing genocide on the Jews, Poles, and gypsies while only enslaving and working to death the other Slavic people while the Soviets completely disregarded the well being of civilians and "liberated" Eastern Europe by essentially colonizing them for 55 years.Comment

Re: HBO's miniseries The Pacific
Part 9 was a very good episode... i agree with many of the thoughts here about character development - it was lacking. many scenes seemed "disconnected" in that the dialogue just wasn't there.
but in episode 9 the scene where the woman pulled the rifle to her head and then he held her had my wife in tears... very profound...STEELERS INDIANS CELTICS
