Buying a laptop, want a little advice

My wife’s laptop died and instead of fixing it since it’s 6 years old, I want to get a reasonably priced laptop. I found a Dell Inspiron 15 for a good price and was looking at upgrading a thing or two to help performance.

    What’s better for the system, for $75, going from 2.0 ghz/fsb 1mb cache to 2.1 ghz/fsb 2mb cache processor,

    OR

to upgrade the RAM from a 3 gb to 4 gb for $25?

I am trying to get the most for what little money I am spending on a new laptop, and want to know which would I notice increased performance most by adding?

    Thanks for the help.

Unless you have a 64 bit operating system, 3GB is the most RAM that your OS will use.

Well I would buy a macbook if I had the money... I am looking in the 300-500 dollar range. Thanks for the Ram advice. What about the processor upgrade, will it be worth the $75?

How soon do you need it? Might be able to find a deal on Black Friday in late November. My brother picked up a Sony Viao for $400 2 years ago.
