John Mayer: Battle Studies November 17th

Yeah I'm a Mayer guy, oh well.

From the 5-6 tracks I've heard this is going to be one of those albums that I'm going to be playing over and over.

It needs to come out already.

Just go on Youtube if you want to hear some tracks.

I liked him more before he became a tatted up blues dude, but his post-Heavier Things stuff has been good and I'll be getting this for sure.

I am really excited for Battle Studies. It will be tough to contend with a follow-up to Contimuum, but this is sounding pretty good so far. The new single is good, catchy, and should get some radio play. But I am more excited for the rest of the album.

"Half of My Heart" - Amazing
"War of My Life" - Best I've heard so far off new album

Listening to the John Mayer Trio as we speak...

If you pre-order the CD off his site (digital or hard copy) you will get an advanced pre-sale code to purchase tickets before anyone else (including any AMEX pre-sales).

$10.99 for the digital copy and $12.99 for the hard copy.

You also get a fee download of "Who Says".

I've ordered mine and plan on seeing him in Houston on Mar 6th.

Tour info and CD info here:

Mayer is my favorite. I love everything he's done.

The song with Taylor Swift, though, i'm not so sure about. Probably my hatred of Taylor Swift blinding me, but oh well.

Still going to get this on release day. Still going to listen to it until I puke.

Probably. It's definitely one of the strongest songs on the album. Initial listen, I have to give the crown to "Assassin" for best song. Once it really kicks in, holy crap is it awesome.

After sampling the album, my favorite song is Heartbreak Warfare.

The album is short but I really like it so far.

Before I say anything about the album, Russell is awesome. Hated him at first, but damned if he doesn't deserve to win by now.

                      Back on topic:
I love the album. As I stated before, John Mayer is my favorite, so that doesn't surprise me. As much as I love the album though, I feel like it falls somewhere in the lower part of the Mayer catalog though. The first 5 songs are terrific. Heartbreak Warfare and Perfectly Lonely are already in the conversation for my favorite song this year. Half of My Heart has really grown on me. Who Says is lyrically great and just an awesome chilled out, downbeat song. It's after Perfectly Lonely though where I lose a bit of interest. Assassin is okay, I suppose. I just can't help but think how the chorus sounds like the Chris Cornell theme song to Casino Royale to me for some reason. Crossroads is one of those songs I think he just recorded on the album so he could do a 10-minute, face melting version of it live. War of My Life feels like averageness personified to me. Do You Know Me uses that phrase way, way too many times. The last song though, Friends, Lovers, Or Nothing, is great. Great way to finish the album.

In the Mayer-verse, it falls somewhere after Continuum (which is my favorite), Room For Squares, and Where the Light Is. It falls somewhere before Heavier Things and As/Is.

Not judged against the other great Mayer albums though, I give it a 8.75 out of 10.

                        Anyone buy the album yesterday?

I did. I don't care that I already had the leaked version.
                        A) I get the Lossless version now.
                        B) There are some artists I feel deserve my money, John Mayer is on that list.

Frankly, I was disappointed there were no Special Editions of it in stores. I wanted that damn Bruce Springsteen cover, but I didn't feel like dealing with iTunes. Downloading albums takes for fricking ever when you're on 56k.

                          I never liked his voice.

But I like Pete Yorn's voice.

So I don't really know if I will get this. Perhaps a rhapsody listen.

Meh, I don't really like this anymore.

If he releases some sessions where he did strictly acoustic I'd like the album a lot better. I hate it when there's overproduction.
