Music Industry Wants Royalties From iTunes 30 Second Samples

"Music royalty groups ASCAP and BMI are harassing online music stores such as iTunes to pay performance fees not only for the songs that they sell, but for the short clips that they use as previews. You know, the things that entice people to pay for music. They want to be paid for advertisements for their product."

The music industry should be thankful that Apple's Online music store even exists in the first place. Apple has already raised the price of certain songs to $1.29. If more royalties get added, the price of a song could continue to go up.

I don’t know of any other industry that tries to badger its customers like the music industry does.

You know, if the music industry didn't have the Itunes store and other legal download applications it'd be at an all-time low. I guess the industry forgets what it was like in the '78-early '82 period when it was at rock bottom. If there was no Itunes it would be even WORSE.

They're a bunch of money grubbing a-holes IMO.

News like this just reinforces the decision I made years ago not to support the mainstream music industry in any way.

ASCAP has always been a thorn.

Acts like these, along with other existing and soon-coming means to release content such as MySpace, Facebook, PureVolume, Rock Band Network, etc., are why labels and publishers are a dying breed, IMO. Silly move by them.

All I will say is that if they do this, they will regret it.

Real dumb. Go ahead and do that ASCAP, and watch the site's pop up all over the place on the net with torrents streaming more free music than you can shake an attorney at.

I completely disagree. I think Itunes has been worse for the music industry then piracy. How many people own/owned a bunch of albums from the 90's that you really only like 1 or 2 songs from? I know I owned a bunch and that was because I really wanted the song, said "F it" and bought the album. Now, I just buy the single from Itunes/Amazon. Its the difference between paying 10-11 dollars and paying 1 dollar. That is the main reason album sales have bottomed out and will never bounce back.

The industry totally panicked and handled piracy like Napster and Kazaa all wrong. Computer savvy people like us have no problem finding ways to download music illegally but most people dont want to try that hard. They dont have time to learn how to use Limewire or Bittorrent. They just want to buy music. Thats why music sales didnt drop that far when Napster was at its height.

I bought more music when I was a Napster abuser.

                      You arent the only one.

From a business perspective, the music industry had the right idea initially. File lawsuits to shut down the easy file sharing services like Napster and Kazaa. During that time so many people were scared about potential lawsuits that they would have just gone back to Cd's.

My mom is a perfect example of that. Before Itunes, if she like a song she bought the whole album because they stopped selling singles. She was too scared of a lawsuit and not internet savvy so she wouldnt get the song through illegal downloading. Now she just goes to Itunes, pays a buck and had her song.

They want to get paid for getting their song advertised? Are they footing the bandwidth? Incredible. Like a tire company harassing a car dealer to pay extra for the tires or something. Just plan asinine.

The only people who benefit off the record and music sales are iTunes and the executives.

Kenny Chesney made $80million last year because he had a kickass tour. In 2007, Madonna made $175M

Most artist are NOT struggling. Artist make 99% of their money from ticket sales while on tour.
