I was at a friends house the other day and they had xp on their computer, dear god I don't know how people use anything but windows 7. Just a great OS.

Simply put - while 7 is shinier and a little faster, it doesn't really offer any real upgrades that most people actually need right now. That's how people do without it. Flash isn't everything. I did that release candidate thing, and while it had some cool features, my only real compliment over XP that I could think of was "wow, it looks pretty cool". That's not quite enough for me to change over.

Is the reformatting of the PC doable through the W7 disc? My comp didn't come with reformatting CDs.

Yes, that's how I did it. When you boot from the disk you'll see the Install Windows screen come up, click that and the second or third screen will ask you which partition you want to install W7 to (it'll also tell you W7 cannot be installed on any of existing partitions). There will be options at the bottom of the screen to delete or format the partitions, highlight the existing partitions and click format. Once that's done click continue and the installation process will create new partitions for W7.

It really was so incredibly easy.

I can't imagine not upgrading from XP to Windows 7. You say it only looks better and is a little faster...but yet when you use an OS you are looking at the screen 100% of the time so yes how it looks is a huge deal..and why not get the maximum speed you can out of your hardware? Honestly I can see not having a huge desire to upgrade from Vista to Windows 7 since Vista to 7 isn't a huge difference but going from XP to 7 is quite an upgrade IMO.

XP is still a huge player for businesses, and will be for years to come.

I put W7 Pro on my home PC and for businesses there is still no real incentive to upgrade outside of the "it's cooler and looks prettier" factor.

I have Windows 7 on three computers in my house. Don't regret it at all.

Bingo. The lessened bootup and shutdown times are very nice. As well as the shorter times for putting the system to sleep.

Anyone have any problems with dual-booting Windows 7 and XP? I'm thinking of doing this, but I just wanted to know if it slows anything down (it shouldn't) or if I have to back everything up before doing this.

Well, I'm in the healthcare business and the fact of the matter is that business critical apps just won't work on Windows 7 yet. Maybe in a couple years.

For me the upgrade was worth it simply for the little things. Being able to quickly snap a window to the left and right makes side by side comparisons quick and painless. Being able to open up apps from the taskbar just by hitting the window button and a number makes things easy. Plus it is stable, fast, light on resources, and looks beautiful. That's more than enough for me.

Right, same for my company. We looked into doing an upgrade but it wasn't feasible because of software compatibility.

I disagree. I think that 7 is better in pretty much every way. From the taskbar, to the windows aero features (actually useful in 7, not just to be pretty like in Vista), better organization of folders (control panel is a nightmare in xp compared to 7), significant performance boost (in my exp), and much more.

To each his own, but to me it is way better.

Upgraded from Vista to 7, much happier with 7. The biggest reason is that my Vista had random issues connecting wirelessly, and that is no problem with 7. Plus, everything just seems to move more smoothly.

my wife had a comapq laptop that we got for like 400 bucks on a deal from best buy. for 2 years it had vista and took like literally 15-20 minutes to start, would freeze after prolonged use and generally was worthless for anything outside of browsing the web. even then at random times, it would stop connecting etc for no reason. Like I would be sitting by my xbox which was connected but the computer would say there is no wireless network.

Cut now to 3 months ago, I put windows 7 on it and it was like that 29.99 bought me a whole new laptop as it runs like a dream, when I turn it on it starts right up in like 1 minute and then your off to the races. So far windows 7 has been great!
