Are there programs to extract songs off iPod?

My HP laptop died and have music on my iPod that I had yet to move to my external HDD.

Never understood why the iPod doesn't allow this natively. That said, for future reference, if you enable the iPod for disk use while your computer isn't in a crashed state, you can dive into its folders and recover all your music files without software, but they are organized with no rhyme or reason and the music file naming convention on the iPod is beyond comprehension.

They don't want people just uploading their ipods on all their friend's computers...If Apple condoned it then it'd make sharing way more common. Most people aren't gonna download some random program to rip the music off an iPod, but if it's right in iTunes then complete non-techies would share their music with friends all the time.

I hear that. However:

1. Every other MP3 player option I've ever used effectively operates as a flash drive natively, unlike the iPod
2. Even if I did upload all my iPod songs to my friend's computer, my friends still wouldn't be able to listen to my purchased iTunes songs without my account credentials

Also, doesn't the Zune allow sharing of songs via WiFi?

Tried the one that miles suggested and the program couldn't find my iPod. I'll try the others when I get home.

1. I think the point still remains that most people dont know how to use a Zune or other MP3 player as a flash drive easily. I remember when I had a Zune, I had to jump through some hoops to get it to work that way.

2. As you said, thats only for Itunes purchased songs. Anything else (songs ripped from CD, downloaded from a non DRM website, downloaded illegally) would be easilly transferred. I have 30 GB of music and maybe 1% of that is Itunes bought. I think most people are the same. The record companies would flip out if they allowed songs to be transferred permanetly that easily. Even the Itunes songs can be burned to a CD, ripped and then transferred.

The Zune sharing only lasts for 3 plays and there is a limit to the number of songs you can share.

Pod to PC does. That's what I used when I had to reformat my laptop.

The proper program will rename the song files back to something comprehensible, though.

When I did this (after my hard drive had a poop), 97% of the song names were retained. Only a few albums changed the names.
It was a relatively painless process.

That said, I quickly bought a backup USB hard drive after that incident - and always back up all my files.

Really? B/c if you look on an iPod the files are stored in a unique way and recognized by the device using a directory and pointers.

So, your mp3 that used to be named Jay-Z - Lucifer.mp3 is knows as Ad4di.mp3 on the iPod.
