    Wanting to build a computer.

So, over winter break I have this idea that I would like to build my own desktop PC. The problem is, I have never built one before so I'm not exactly sure where to start. I have a pretty good idea of what I want this rig to do, but I'm not sure how to approach such a project. I haven't really come up with a money limit, but here is what I would love for this thing to do in a perfect world:

I listen to a ton of music, so I want this thing to have a massive HDD and a good set of speakers. I would like to (if not now, then in the future) buy a record player and somehow hook it up through the PC and use the PC's speakers to listen to the record.

A big HDD is also required since one of my biggest hobbies is photography and I love messing around with photoshop when I have sufficient time.

I'm not a big PC gamer, but I wouldn't mind a set up where I can play recent games on good settings. I have CIV4, Company of Heroes, and Black & White 2 and while they do run on my laptop, its not the greatest gaming platform. I also want to play some WoW on this thing.

I use my laptop quite a bit to catch up on tv shows via hulu and similar sites, so being able to stream HD visuals would be good. If its possible, I would like to use my current LCD HDtv as my screen. I would like to be able to hook my Wii up to the screen as well - speaking of which, I would like someway of recording stuff of the wii to make videos or what not. I would love a drive capable of playing blu-ray movies, but its not a necessity.

Outside of looking at keyboards and mice, I'm at a loss at what I should be putting on my list of things to price-check.

What is your budget? Total including tax and shipping.

I'm pulling a number out of the air here, but does $750 sound reasonable for what I want it to do or am I going to need to make some changes?

That is reasonable if you aren't needing a monitor and you don't need a $300 video card

I would like to use my current LCD HDtv if that is at all possible.

Should be. Depends on if your TV has PC hookups which 99% of them do.

Thinking about getting a new one as well. I have had mine since Halloween 2005 and its starting to chug. I guess the Athlon64 amd 3500+ isn't cutting it anymore.

Just make sure the parts you pick out are compatible... and don't skimp on the power source.

So I read a little bit of the PC Builder's Bible and have a general idea of what CPU I want to build around. Any impressions or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Basically, I think I want an Intel Quad Core proc. I think I have them narrowed down to the Yorkfield Q9505/Q9550 (only difference seems to be the cache size and Q9500 has Multimedia instructions and Q9505 does not - though the Builder's Bible didn't really push the Mulitmedia instructions a lot) and the Nehalem i7-920. Nehalem includes an L3 cache and is supposed to use less energy and be cooler, but it would force me to buy DDR3 RAM and I'm not sure exactly how much faster it would be for me over the other quad-cores.

It all depends on what your going to be doing. There are 3 basic kinds:

                          Gaming PC (High-End)
                          Multimedia PC (Mid-Tier)
                          School PC (Basic)

Mainly multimedia with some gaming (ie: Company of Heroes, CIV4, WOW).
