    The Fourth Kind (movie)

I just saw a pre-screening for this tonight. The interesting thing is when you walk out of the theater, you don't really talk about "how the movie was," but rather the information that was contained within the movie and the actual recordings used in it.

Basically, there were supposed paranormal events that occurred in Nome, Alaska at the beginning of the millennium. There are psychological therapy sessions recorded and integrated into the movie, where they dramatize the events sequentially following a psychology practitioner that claims (even today) that her daughter was abducted by non-human terrestrials.

So with that said, I thought it was pretty interesting how they took real life video and audio mediums and put them in the movie rather seamlessly, putting the real footage and the scripted footage together in the film. Though it was only PG-13, it had some disturbing images that I could see shouldn't really be suitable for 13 year olds.

This film mostly brings up OS's age-old question about what other life forms are not only out there, but here on Earth. I don't necessarily suppose recommend anyone seeing this for the movie itself (I thought it was only okay though it had some pretty gripping moments and very decent acting), but for skeptics about alien activity out there... I do suggest that people at least research these Nome documentations and witness accounts. I'm surprised that I haven't heard of them until now, and I'm surprised that they aren't more exposed to the public. There are some actual supernatural elements that were archived in these videos, and with my mom being someone who has encountered the first kind, I have no choice but to believe what I saw. I believe the psychologist and what happened to her daughter. Call them crazy, but there are substantial indications out there.

I don't know when the movie comes out in theaters, but I do suggest that if you see it you report back about what you think. Again, this discussion almost isn't so much about the dramatization reenacted on screen (the movie itself) as it is about alien life and abductions being more than just theories and claims.

The movie itself is maybe like a 6.8/10. Again, not actually bad... I just didn't really go ga-ga over it or anything. I preferred Paranormal Activity over this as far as movies go, but I take this movie as more than entertainment value, which is why it's overall difficult to rate.

Funny you say that actually, around the beginning of the movie the psychologist flies from a meeting in Anchorage to Nome for a therapy session with a patient.

Looks pretty solid, I've heard though other than the number of missing people the rest is fiction including the archive footage and stuff. Hopefully there is some stuff legit though. Either way looks entertaining and hope it comes to my town. I love with they use home cameras bits for horror movies. Makes it feel a bit more real and definitely more effective imo. Thats why I think Paranormal Activity has been so effective and scary/suspenseful.

I see what you mean, but I hadn't heard of the movie before going into watching it so I was extremely gullible in believing the real things were indeed real. After doing some research and finding out that most of it wasn't, I have a feeling that most people going in with that notion won't feel too empowered by the movie.

As I said, this movie holds its impact through this "real" footage, and if it isn't real then I feel I can't really hold this movie up very high at all. I felt like it worked because of the "real" footage, with the way they integrated it into the rest of the movie and such.

Oh, and the movie isn't very scary at all. I don't know if they're trying to promote it as a horror film at all, but it's definitely not. I guarantee you there is at least one bit that will make you jump unexpectedly, but beyond that I'd say the fear tactics are very minimal. I think they were trying to pass it off as a dramatization of real life events, but because those have been verified as untrue I have a hard time believing that many people will give this one a passing grade.

Yea I can see people being let down once they research and find out its not "real" but as long as it looks "real" i'll be able to enjoy it no problem. I definitely get the "horror/scifi" vibe from it. Pretty shocked to hear its not really scary. From the trailers/tv spots I thought it was a paranormal/scifi horror docu style movie. I kind of appreciate movies more nowadays they don't rely on the jumps scares as much and just go for the creepy, uncomfortable type feelings. Jump scares get old and feel really cheap to me.

Then in that case I do think you'll appreciate some moments in this movie. They have very well done build-ups in some scenes, and the way that they will show the "real" footage along with the movie footage either side-by-side or whatever really helps immerse you in the moment.

And like I also said, I would just have a hard time believing they would show some of this footage and keep its PG-13 rating. There are just some things not meant for kids if it's actually the real thing, so I was surprised by that... makes me realize now that since it's not real, it must be okay.

Anyway, as for the movie's horror tactics, upon viewing the first twenty minutes or so you'll kind of get a vibe like the first twenty minutes in The Ring, a movie that I actually didn't expect to be as scary as it was. The mystery clouded the movie and the direction was unknown for a long part of the beginning. So if you've seen The Ring, you may be disappointed in the overall fearful presence that the movie kind of doesn't bring, though I don't think it really tries to.

I'll tell you what though, this director has a good eye for shots. There's this one shot preluding a night scene or whatever, and it's like a slow moving 360 pan of an owl, only the owl keeps its body in the same position and just rotates its head around with the camera, watching you the entire pan. It's pretty freaky and awesome at the same time, I was impressed.

Article I found about the movie. Apparently Alaska doesn't appreciate the movie lying and calling it real. Pretty good read, I imagine spoilers are in there though so read at your own risk.
