I never read the book as a kid well, that I remember anyways. But, my girlfriend loves it and wants to go see it so, I'll probably try to be a good guy and take her.

But, after seeing the preview what the Hell is this movie supposed to be about anyway? Does it have an actual plot or is it just some kid running around in fields with big monster, cuddly, looking things, like the trailer insists?

Just looked it up on wikipedia.

OK so it was before I was born. I think my brother had the book first. I see they say this is a movie not for kids. I wonder if it was made for adults that had this book going up as a kid?

Spike Jonze (Being John Malkovich, Adaptation) is the director so you know it will be good. Spike is also the best music video director of all time IMO.

                        Absolutely amazing.

Not a little kids movie at all, despite the rating. There were a handful of kids who were crying as they left the theater, I saw quite a few adults wiping their eyes at the end, and I myself had to catch myself before I got all teary eyed in front of the girlfriend.

But really, the movie was amazing. Music was amazing, set was outstanding, Max played his part perfectly and all of the Wild Things were awesome and actually developed.

Re: Where the Wild Things Are

Watched this film a few days ago.

This is not a movie for children in the traditional sense.

Well, I'll elaborate. I think children will enjoy looking at the giant, furry monsters running around, but that's where it really ends.

The movie is mostly dark, the monsters are bitter and easily agitated, and their idea of fun is mostly frightening and alarming. There aren't any bright colors or child pleasing themes. It is, for the most part, very much like the children's book.

Having said that, I've always been one to suggest that children are smarter than we give them credit for and the book has always attracted the young (it attracted me when I was a young child). I think a child that takes the time to understand the theme will see how it relates very much to them and their peers.

I believe adults will find satisfaction in the film as it doesn't do too much to water down that central theme. It is, in essence, still about a child learning to manage his anger and fear and finding solace in the comfort and care of those that love them. It's about togetherness while still examining the realization and respect of one's need to be independent. There are many adults that will see that relating to their every day lives.

I find this to be one of the few films a child should watch with their parent and the parent should then ask: What did you learn?
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

"You'll not find more penny-wise/pound-foolish behavior than in Major League Baseball." - Rob Neyer

I thought it was boring, depressing and long (even though it was only 1:30 minutes). Shame - I really love Jonze's other stuff.

I agree, this is one of the dullest movies I have ever seen. Judging by the adults and the kids around me and their reactions I think it was unanimous and not suprising it tanked at the box office big time. My 10 year old was bored out of his skull ( he read the story) and I now jokingly tell him the next time he misbehaves I will rent this movie and make him watch all nite long as punishment.

There was nothing deep about this movie. It was based on a very short story and it showed. I don't know why it was even made if it wasn't going to be meant for children. It's a pointless movie and James Gandolfini is so typecast for me now that I still think of Tony Soprano even when he's a CGI character.
