Best video editing software for making mixes from video game footage?

Is there any freeware that's really good for this? So many guys on here make mixes from video game footage/replays and I want to start making some of my own.

Also, how do guys capture footage directly from their TV onto their camera? Obviously the video quality is subpar when I'm holding the camera in front of the TV and just recording. Are there A/V cables I can buy to connect my TV and my camera?

    Any other info is appreciated!

    1. Windows Movie Maker is simple and can handle what I figure you are wanting to do. It's really easy to learn.

    2. Uhh, most people have their systems hooked up so their computers when recording video.

      Try Vegas Pro 9.

        ehh,

I have the HAVA HD recorder device. Too bad it only works on my wife's laptop. There is something blocking my laptop from connecting to it. When I record the gameplay on her laptop the picture quality is fantastic though.

I bought it off of woot.com one day. I think it was like $75

          Capture Devices:
Any basic capture card - there are hundreds of these around. They don't capture from an HD source though so you'll have to play in SD. Cost: ~$50. Sample Video
HAVA Platinum - captures from an HD source but doesn't capture into HD quality... it downgrades it to 720x400. Cost: $150 or less. Sample Video
Hauppauge HD-PVR - captures from an HD source and captures into HD quality. Cost: $250 or less. Sample Video

          Software:
Windows Movie Maker - free, fairly easy to use, some limitations on what you can do
Pinnacle Studio - Can be found cheap on eBay. I used 9SE for the longest time and it served most of my needs. Only downside is that it can't handle the videos generated by the HDPVR.
Sony Vegas Pro 9 - As recommended by someone else, it's a great piece of software, especially if you get an HDPVR as it can handle the videos natively.

            Vegas isn't exactly freeware.

Vegas and Adobe Premiere are the best, but both fairly expensive. And both have a decent learning curve.

WMM is probably the best freeware out there, it's the only freeware I can think of off the top of my head anyway.

Yeah, this is a great little program. Very easy to use and can give some great results.

But now I have a Macbook Pro and it comes with some great software for video editing.

Earlier versions of ULEAD VideoStudio are also user friendly and should be fairly cheap on Ebay.

Yeah I'm going to end up getting a capture card, seems like that's the best way to go.

Thanks for all the info, very helpful. I'll pick up the HAVA device, sounds like it is exactly what I'm looking for. When you have a card that captures from an HD source do you just connect it to your TV and it'll record whatever is on the TV (video game/tv/dvd) or do I have to change the physical connection when I want to record from my PS3 instead of something on television?

I forgot all about WMM, I used to use it a 3-4 years ago. I couldn't even find it on my home PC, had to do a search just to get to it.

I just keep my plugged up at all times because I don't want to unhook everything but in order to record the TV you will have to unhook it from the PS3 and hook it up to the TV. I think it downgrades the quality of your TV too but Im not sure since I've never used it.

I wish I would have had it when I was really into CH2K8.
