    Laptop problems

People I need your help big time. I have a HP Compaq NX9005, bought in '02 or '03 I guess. Anyway, when I boot the laptop it says: PXE-E61 Media test failure, check cable. And after a few seconds it goes on and says: Operating System not found.
I do not know much about computer hardware, therefore I need your help, with this problem. I need the laptop for research papers etc.
    Thanks in advance.

Check the hard drive cable, usually there is a cover you can remove to access it. Check the BIOS boot order and have the CD or HD as the first in the list.

It could be that the cable for the hard drive may have popped out. but most likely this means your HD is dead.

Laptops don't have cables, but still could be that the HDD has been bumped from the connection.

First is to go into the bios and make sure the boot order is correct.

If it is, on the front under the latch to hold it closed, there is a little panel held on by 2 screws. This is the HDD, give that a firm bump (but not hard, shouldn't take much, in fact you could just push and achieve the same effect) with your hand, it's all connected so if the HDD has been jarred loose somehow, this will fix that.

If it still won't boot, it's likely a bad HDD that will need to be replaced.

HDD probably dead. Just happened to me on an HP laptop I bought 2 years ago. I had a new HDD installed last week and sold it on ebay over the weekend. Restore CDs to factory default wouldn't work. Wasn't the same laptop. Got rid of it. Will never buy another HP computer. The model I had dv6000 was known to have issues that HP knows about and didn't recall the model.

Most do have a little cable or ribbon, you don't want that connected directly to the board so it could easily break.

Not typically* one that is, in any way, going to spontaneously come loose. Most you aren't even going to see unless you take the entire motherboard out because it's on the other side of the HDD cavity. His especially, seeing as his HDD is mounted inside a slide in cage.

*I probably should have said typically before, as there are a minority that do utilize an accessible cable, but not his laptop.
