U2 and the Rolling Stones take the cake.

I'm not sure rap/hip hop has the crossover appeal to have the most popular artist...

How many 40+ women love Jay-Z? Even a lot of 50 or 60+ people like U2 or the Rolling Stones...

Nothing against Jay-Z, he's very talented and very popular...just believe he's speaking to a smaller segment of the population compared to U2 and whatnot.

          Most biggest, really?

As to the question, absolutely not. I question if he even is the biggest star in his genre, as I'd have him behind Dr. Dre and Eminem personally. Now if we want to examine this on a world wide level, how many people do you think would recognize him in Europe or Asia, much less say Africa or Australia.

As for the numerous #1 albums, that is as much luck in the timing of the release than anything else. I'd more like to see the number of weeks an album stayed at #1 when looking at that statistic.

Honestly, he isn't even the biggest star in his household, Beyonce easily dwarfs him. And if I am so out of the loop they aren't together anymore so be it, but still Beyonce easily dwarfs him, and she is far surpassed by Madonna, who for a solo artist would walk away with this crown IMO.

I would say Michael Jackson was probably the "most biggest" name in music.

I dont think Dre is even close to him in worldwide popularity. Keep in mind Dre hasnt dropped in album in almost 10 yrs. Jay is also pretty huge in Europe and Asia. Em is the only rapper that is arguably as popular as Jay world wide imo.

As for the number 1 albums, Its not like Jay drops his albums in January/Feb when its a record release wasteland. He drops his in the fall when most top artists release records for the holiday season.

Michael Jackon by far if we're not just talking people that are alive..or if we had this conversation a few months ago.

If not, I know U2 is a band, but Bono is U2 and the reason people come to see their shows. I have no doubt if Jay Z and Bono/U2 went on identical world tours that Bono would outsell Jay Z. Their music just touches a wider audience of people.

I think it comes down to who could hold a stadium tour. Not an arena tour but an actual stadium tour. U2 is currently doing it. The Stones can. Madonna arguably could. I dont think Jay could fill a 70,000 seat stadium in the US.

It's your thread, so you make the rules, but if Bono did a solo tour, it would be the same , but I'll go with Madonna and Britney over Jay Z in terms of world wide popularity.

The one thing Jay Z does do is stay out of the press when it comes to his personal life compared to the majority of todays stars. We don't know nearly as much about Jay Z and Beyonce as we did about Britney and K-Fed or Madonna and A-Rod or Justin and whomever he is sleeping with.

For being as huge of stars as they are, Beyonce and Jay Z aren't nearly in the daily news as much as lesser accomplished stars are, which I appreciate, but it probably hurts their world wide status.

Yeah, I'm sure he could in certain cities, but not across the country and not over seas. I think Briteny could have done so in her prime as well.

It depends on who else is on tour with you, U2 has Black eyed Peas and someone else, if Hov and Beyonce did a tour together then they could sell stadiums out.
