Coming from where Jay comes from alone I would give him the Biggest Artist in the world nod. We have to take in account no one gave him a record deal. They made Rocafella independent and got distribution from Capitol (I believe) then did a 50/50 venture with Def Jam. He climbed up the ranks so much from the Projects to even Performing at the World Series tomm Thursday 10/29/09... Everyone else was either given the lime light or it was made easy for obvious reasons.

"From Marcy to Madison Square, To the only thing that Matters in just a Matter or years"... no gimmicks in the raps either its all real business. I give this question the Yes. No disrepect or discredit to anyone else named.

I take that back. Can't say most popular. No matter the conditions the facts are facts. There are artists more popular but Jay is doing a lot of huge things.

I can't believe it took that long for Sir Paul to come up in this thread. THAT is the answer to your question. Jay Z probably isn't even top ten.

He was more popular with the Beatles, he hasn't had a album debut at number 1 since 1982. But no doubt EVERYBODY knows who he is..

He holds the record for SOLO artist with the most Number #1 albums of all time, he is up there..

That record means little to me, considering we're in a time now where "artists" make so much money that they and their labels buy tons of copies of their records on release day to help boost numbers.

Not to mention with the influx of downloading music, and all of that...are record sales really the standard on how to judge an artist's success? I'd say no - but the problem is there really is no other way to say it.

Jay-Z may have more #1 albums, but McCartney is FAR more popular in the world.

I don't think he is. But I am 38, don't own any of his stuff. He's doing fine w/o me.

My question is rap/hip-hop acts touring. I know it is huge in the northeast and such, but here in Austin, TX we don't get alot of national hip/rap acts coming to town. And when they do, they come in large shows (like 4 or 5 acts for one concert). How big are the tours? Where do they tour? How often does 'Z make it to Seattle, Denver, Phoenix, Tucson, or Portland?

Austin is a fairly large city. Springsteen, U2, Rolling Stones, Beyonce tour here...among countless others (hell, SXSW is held here annually along with ACL Fest). So we have a large, music loving community, not to mention a rather young and diverse demographic, but the hip-hop pulse in this area is pretty faint.

I'm sure Houston gets more of the R&B/Hip-Hop/Rap stuff.

Like a ton of other people have said in this thread - absolutely not. I know a lot of people who have no clue who he is. I couldn't say who the most popular is, but I would have to say it's probably a pop singer or a country singer.

That actually is more of an argument for Jay than against him. The fact that he still sells whole albums in a time when people are more likely to buy singles from Itunes or illegally download albums is a credit to Jay's popularity.

If Eminem released an album each year, he'd easily take that title as would have Michael Jackson.

Added to that is that in the current days where first week album sales are 35-50% of the total sales, it isn't that amazing.

And the technology today makes access to purchasing music a million times easier than in the 60's and 70's. Not to mention the drop off of the importance of radio and MTV in recent years.
