Ah, crap, my bad man. I read the first post two days ago and completely forgot that you said no bands.

Ok, I'll have to get back to you on this one.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

"You'll not find more penny-wise/pound-foolish behavior than in Major League Baseball." - Rob Neyer

None of that has anything to do with music.

I don't see anybody wanting to know what Bono or McCartney is wearing, what trends their setting
Then you don't follow news much outside of hip hop music.

Bono is easily the most socially influential musician in the world.

Artist...in the title.....I know about his work of going green and leaving a smaller carbon foot print...even tho U2 stageshows use enough energy to light up a small mexican village for 3 months...Jay Z is also a socially influential musician..In his work with MTV global campaign on the global water crisis...And Paul mcCartneys work on removing unmapped Landmines in third world Countries. So I am up on it sir...

Then you'd know that their impact is far bigger than Jay-Z getting kids to wear generic clothing with his label's name on it.

Hell, Kanye is probably more influential trend wise than Jay. He's also bigger in the mainstream over the last 5 years than Jay has ever been.

Your musical taste will change over time, it happens to everybody. Rap is a young man game. Cats that were young when the rap game started are now in there mid to late 40's. My brother was 14 when rappers delight dropped. 45 year olds are not consuming rap like they did in the past because of the misogynistic violent filth that rap has become. In fact most of those 45 year olds are deleting rap from there kids ipods.

And popularity of albums and singles.

Kanye has been far bigger in mainstream than Jay-Z. Everyone who doesn't listen to rap has probably heard of both, but I'd bet they're far more likely to know a Kanye song than Jay-Z.

Jay-Z is pretty much on rap stations and occasionally top 40 here. Kanye is on rap, top 40, and our station here that only does rock/pop from 80s-current.

Kanye has had 3 #1 singles, a #2 single, and a #3 single in the last 5 years.

Jay-Z needed Kanye to have his first top 3 singles of his career this year.

Jay z/Hip hop is not pigeon holed into just music its culture, trends, Lifestyle..I don't see anybody wanting to know what Bono or McCartney is wearing, what trends their setting.. Also someone mentioned about short Tours Jay Z has, he has alot of other ventures going on that prevents him from doing 4 month tours...
Not buying it. You say JZs' other interests prevent him from going on tours longer than 3-4 months?

IMO he can't go on tour that long because he runs out of options. He can't sell anymore places. He has a very limited reach.

Hell, Jacko had been laying in bed awake for 10 years and he signed a deal for 50 shows at the O2 arena in London. 50 Frickin' shows! I think we both agree JZ could never pull that gig ever! Z doesn't generate that kinda heat.

Like I said earlier, my favorite band is Depeche Mode. Many of you don't know who the hell that is, and if you do...you're shocked they're still performing. And I guarantee you that they dwarf JZ in touring in every aspect. Booking and profits. They are a "made" band all around the world. Not just America, but Germany, France, England, Japan, Israel...they will sell any mother out, any time.

You go to Europe and say "JZ" 95% of the people will think you got the alphabet out of order. You say Depeche Mode, and women start ovulating...and guys rush out of the discoteks to stand in line to buy tickets.

                    .
Thats just not true. The fact is Jay is CONSTANTLY touring. He headlined perhaps the biggest rap tour ever (The Hard Knock Life Tour). A year ago he did a 50 city tour with Mary J. Blige. He headlined the UK's Glastonbury festival and was the first rap artist to ever do that. He's constantly touring in Europe and Asia. His reach is much farther than you think.

Regarding Depeche Mode, I think you are overestimating their reach. They wouldnt even be in my top 10 most popular. Depeche is never going to play a Super Bowl. I'm a huge music fan and I struggle to name more than 2 songs of theirs. Selling out arenas isnt the end all be all of popularity. Pearl Jam and Coldplay constantly sell out but I dont think they are top 10.

The whole question that started this thread is bad because Jay isnt even a top 10 most popular artist but people need to stop underrestimating how big of an artist he is.

Again anyone can have a 5 yr run (Ask Nelly). Kanye is at the tail end of his. If he is still as popular as he is 5 years from now then its an argument.

Also the singles argument is weak because the music industry is much more of a singles oriented buisness now because of Itunes. For the majority of Jay's career he didnt release singles just full albums. This was also before Billboard changed its rankings system to give radio plays a bigger percentage in determining a singles position in the top 200.

The Super Bowl? This thread is titled "...artist in THE WORLD."

"The world" could care less about the Super Bowl. No one is saying Z isn't popular, or big. You make my point kinda when you say DM isn't in "your" Top 10. Right. And they outsell JZ worldwide 10x. If DM isn't in your 10, Z is way behind them.

He just isn't worldwide man. Doing one festival doesn't make him international. And sure he did a whopping 50 city tour, but he needed another A-List artist (Blige) traveling with him to help put butts in seats.

Not that I don't believe you. But could you link me up to show how he "constantly touring Europe and Asia."

Sure they do. But usually when an A-List goes on tour to support an album, they have a smaller/up and coming act. Not another heavyweight. The Billy Joel/Elton John show is a rarity. Jacko didn't have Mariah Carey opening for him at his O2 gig, he didn't need any help putting butts in seats. McCartney doesn't open for the 'Stones on their latest tour and vice versa.

In the rap/hip-hop genre, I think it is more common to have several top-shelf acts traveling together.

Anyway, here is the current DM tour going on now...they are the headliners, they have an opening act, it varies, and it is always a smaller, lesser known act. This is a world tour baby...http://www.depechemode.com/tour.html
