    Computer memory?

I'm not that technical when it comes to computers so I figured I'd ask you guys and maybe get some help. I need to upgrade my computer's memory but I don't know how much I should add. It only has 1GB of memory and I keep a lot of music on it. I usually just use the computer for music and browsing the web.

How much memory should I add and what name brand should I buy? I plan on buying it and letting Best Buy or someone like that install it for me. Thanks fellas!

    Re: Computer memory?

What operating system do you have ???

    With XP 1GB is plenty

With Vista you need at least 3GB to run smooth.

With Windows 7, you need 4gb or more to run smooth.

Youir processor also plays a part in it too, its not just all about the RAM.

      Re: Computer memory?

Memory requirements for OS's are all bs. If you get new RAM, or memory, it has to match the exact RAM you currently have. I would just buy all new RAM and completely replace with the new if you aren't that technical. Go to newegg.com and find corsair memory. It's the best. You can find 4gb cheap now.

Thanks for the help guys. My operating system is Vista, although I have given some thought of switching over to Windows 7. So I should install at least another 3GB just for Vista? How much extra should I install for music and stuff?

          Re: Computer memory?

first you should go to the manufacturer's website and find out what the max amount/type of ram your motherboard will support, then go from there.

you can download cpu-z for free from downloads website and it will tell you everything you need to know about your motherboard and the type of ram you have installed.

Actually it is true depending on your processor, because with some duo cores and quad cores, Windows 7 causes it to perform badly.

Do you have a link or something? I'm running with 1GB on a Core Duo and it is silky smooth.

No need to make someone spend more money than they need to on ram.
