It's true that a decent amount of systems were using 2-digit year representation, and they needed to be switched over to 4-digit representation, lest disaster happen. Granted, it's not like the world would explode, but still, it could have been bad. A lot of work was put into that change, and that saved any headaches on Y2K morning.

That's based on shortsightedness from developers, assuming that their system wouldn't live to see the new millenium, and that came back to them. But there was a lot of work done getting those systems ready for the year.

From that aspect, yes something was prevented. But again it was all based on assumptions and conjecture.

However, people who were preparing for some kind of crazy world meltdown, was totally insane(maxing out credit cards, building shelters WTF?). Like you said, it's not like the world was going to explode.

I agree with you, that nothing was going to happen that was a super huge disaster like people were talking about. But there was a big concern about economic effect, like money not being able to be withdrawn, and other concerns such as that.

The people that thought the world was about to end were crazy. It was a purely man-made problem, and it was a man-made solution.

Yeah, all that Y2K hysteria was pretty crazy. Though oddly enough my computer did crash and I had to repair reinstall of Windows the 1st time I turned it on in the new year. 99-00 was my freshman year in college and I'd left my computer at school when I went home for semester break in December then when I got back in January and booted it up, things just went berserk. It was an HP Pavillion running Windows 98.

That being said, there will probably be some groups and other idiots causing trouble as 12/21/2012 comes around. Sadly, no matter how ridiculous the scenario may seem, there will always be groups of people who believe it and do stupid stuff as a result. I still remember comet Hale-Bopp. I'm going to leave it at that though as I may be treading very close to violating the TOS here.

Yeah, on June 6th, 2006 (6/6/06) weren't we all supposed to melt? Come on. I'm not really scared and if it does happen, it happens and then we're all gone. No point in worrying.

What makes this December 21st thing kinda crazy is all of the astrological things going on that are coinciding with the date. That, to me, is the only thing making it somewhat credible.

I wrote a paper about this my senior year at UF in Mexican Art History. It's definitely not the best thing I've written, but it does break the December 21st thing down fairly well. It's a quick read (8 pages, double spaced) if you guys want a concise summary about the end of the world.

A calendar based on solar events has some astrological occurrences?

That reminds me of when I was four or five and was amazed that my birthday occurred on the day I was born.

This is the main thing that makes the date kind of freaky to me:

The Sacred Tree is a common icon in all Mesoamerican cultures, representing the four cardinal directions and the central foundation to life. It can be found on ancient Mesoamerican steles, artifacts, calendars, and even in space, where the Maya have linked a band of the Milky Way and the ecliptic path of the sun to create a four part cross-section that they call the Sacred Tree. The Milky Way band is depicted in Maya artifacts as a canoe filled with gods dipping into the underworld where in the sky, it can be seen as a group of constellations falling below the horizon. The path of these constellations runs through the ecliptic path of the sun, and on noon of December 21, 2012, the sun will be in dead center of the Sacred Tree Milky Way band, and the center of the Milky Way galaxy, which the Mayas believe to be a gateway to the underworld. To add to this rare astrological occurrence, this day also happens to be the winter solstice. While many are skeptical of the Maya prediction of the Great Cycle date coinciding with the winter solstice, the chances of this occurring accidentally is extremely rare, adding a large amount of credibility to the Mayas and their ability to accurately predict time and astrological events on many different levels.
