As one doctor said, it's the difference between looking at 2-D images and guessing what's happening or looking at 3-D and knowing what's happening," said software developer Eliot Winer.
He showed an example of how the BodyViz software can make a difference in helping doctors between understand a case. With the scan of a 6-month-old baby's abdomen, the software highlights dense tissue in bright white, drawing attention to something unusual.
"What you're seeing is this tumor," Winer said. "What it's actually doing is squishing, moving her other organs to make space."
Doctors said it's the kind of precision that gives them crucial insight and also engages patients in their care."
Enabling it with BodyViz will make accuracy go way up and reduce mistakes and increase effectiveness of the doctors," said software developer Jim Oliver."
We can fly right into the trachea," said BodyViz President and Chief Executive Officer Curt Carlson.
Researchers said the real breakthrough is the application. Doctors can use the software to analyze scans from their laptops, using an Xbox game controller."
So it makes it extremely easy to use for, again, surgeons, students, faculty and so on," said Carlson.
Doctors at Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center will soon be using the BodyViz software to get a whole new look at what's going on inside the body."
Being able to put the physicians and the patients in their own data is amazing," said Winer.
The technology has additional applications, including the ability to measure abdominal fat levels to help patients with weight loss.
