    Re: Official DROID Discussion Thread

Damn, you Sprint guys are lucky! They just announced the HTC EVO 4G! It's like the HD2, but with Android and Sense! It is a BEAST! 8MP camera + 720p video recording. Check it out!

We've been rumoring a WiMAX "HTC Supersonic" for a while now, and Sprint just dropped the hard news: the phone will be dubbed the HTC EVO 4G, will be released this Summer and it's easily the best specced phone we've ever witnessed. The hardware is of quite obvious HD2 descent, but with Android onboard and some nice aesthetic tweaks, the EVO 4G takes on a life of its own. The handset is centered around a 480 x 800 4.3-inch TFT LCD, with a Snapdragon QSD8650 1GHz processor under the hood (the CDMA version of the QSD8250 in the HD2 and Nexus One), and even a helpful 1GB of built-in memory and 512MB of RAM -- hello app storage! Even the battery is bigger than the HD2, and the camera is an 8 megapixel monstrosity with flash, that's capable of 720p video, and is augmented by a 1.3 megapixel front facing camera for good measure. The phone features HDMI out (though you'll need an adapter for turning it into a TV-familiar HDMI plug), 802.11b/g WiFi, and an 8GB microSD card. There's that still-rare Android 2.1 underneath an updated version of HTC's Sense UI. But... despite all these wild features, what actually sets the EVO 4G apart is the fact that it's Sprint's first 4G phone. The handset runs a combo of EV-DO Rev. A and WiMAX, with calls still being made over CDMA and the EV-DO / WiMAX options for data. Interestingly, it sounds like concurrent data and voice use might be possible for the first time on CDMA carrier in this way (killing AT&T's well-advertised differentiator), though Sprint says that's still in the testing phase. One other new feature is the Sprint hotspot app, another MiFi-style connection sharing number, which is obviously aided greatly by the WiMAX on board and can support up to eight concurrent users. Follow after the break for our hands-on impressions and videos of the phone in action, including an up-close-and-personal test of the touchscreen keyboard. Below you'll find galleries of the phone by its lonesome and up against the Nexus One and iPhone 3G. Update: We've got a graph comparing the Nexus One and Droid with the EVO spec for spec, and there's also a pictorial shootout with the Desire and HD2. Looks like the moto droid. Too bad sprint coverage is bad and monthly bill is very high in my area.

WOW but I just got the Pre a few months ago.
That phone with Sprint's $69 plan looks like a winner.

Very nice looking phone. I wouldn't have Sprint service again unless they paid me to have it.

Was leaning towards getting a droid when my sprint contract runs out next month but now that the nexus is coming to sprint right now I'm pretty sure that's gonna be my new phone. Maybe sprint stinks for other areas but around here for me the coverage is great and the price is the best compared to any other compreable plan.

I bit the bullet and switched to Verizon yesterday and got the DROID Eris. Needless to say i'm back on AT&T awaiting the Nexus One for Verizon.

I was looking at the MOTO Droid, but it's so big. Does it bother you guys at all?

So you had the Eris for a day or two and switched back to AT&T and got the Nexus One?

                    Interesting...

The N1 seems like it's going to be the only good Android option with a true Google Experience on AT&T seeing as how ATT are neutering all Android devices so far. Like replacing the default search engine to Yahoo and not allowing any apps to be installed without getting them through the marketplace.

Nah didn't get the Nexus One for AT&T. $529 is alot of friggin money. I'm trying to wait for the Verizon Nexus One but I might actually roll with the HTC Incredible. Whichever drops first!

Looks like it may finally be out by Thursday. *keeps fingers crossed*

Flippin' finally, right? Verizon Wireless put the long-awaited Android 2.1 update on hold for its cadre of Motorola Droid owners earlier in the month, with an all-too-vague "TBD" as the only detail as to when we could look for it to actually, really land. We've just happened upon what looks to be an internal Verizon email that went out this morning, and sure enough, it sounds as if the update will at long last begin hitting Droid owners in just a few minutes. At noon on 3/30 (that's today, vaquero), a grand total of 1,000 users will receive notification of the update, while 9,000 more will get a similar alert just before midnight. If all goes well, the rest of ya will see v2.1 slide down starting on Thursday, though it looks as if patience will be your only friend as you await your turn. Head on past the break for the full memo, but don't get your hopes up too high -- wouldn't want to be let down again, would you buttercup?
