If you chose to go with a custom rom, and you'll likely lose your data. What you need is Titanium Backup to back up your apps with data. You can also get SMS Backup/Restore to back your text messages. If you want to backup your call history, there's an app for that too.

Titinium backup is awesome. Not only does it back up data but it backs up the app itself. Once you flash a new rom you load titanium backup and tell it to restore app and data. It reinstall the app and then the data so it's exactly like the last time you loaded the app.

I love flashing a new ROM on my SII. Always makes it feel like I've got a brand new phone to play around with. Good times.

ICS is available for my EVO 3D.

A bit cautious though. Are these things usually stable off the bat? Will they mess anything up? Also, is there a definitive "new features" list somewhere?

The Google one? The shipping charge for a $20 case made me pass. Doesn't even have the smart cover feature. I went with a Moko Smartcover Case and Stylus for $22 from Amazon.

Yeah they are typically stable. I have a friend who's been running it on the 3D with no issues... As for new features list, you may just have to look up ICS on Google or YouTube (Google usually releases videos accompanying each new release)

That's a "feature" of the stock messenger. Try Handcent or Go SMS.

so yesterday I just received the update for my htc EVO 3D.
Ice cream sandwich is a whole different level! When I first got it I seriously couldn't even stop playing with it for a good hour. Face unlock is pretty good however I did have some problems at night which was pretty annoying because you always had to put in your password
Now all I'm trying to figure out now is do I still get the jelly bean update or is that just for samsung devices?

Jelly Bean is only on the GSM versions of the Galaxy Nexus and the Nexus 7. Unless you root and find a rom somewhere.
