Netbooks Versus Notebooks/Regular Computers
My brother (Ronny) bought my niece a $300 Gateway Netbook, to be given to her at Christmas. Her father (my other brother, Michael) asked Ronny to take back the netbook and contribute $300 toward and ImacNotebook which he can get for $900 on Amazon. I wanted to get her a Gravity text messaging phone or one of that type for $200-$250, but he wants all of us to chip in the $300 for the Apple. She uses the computer mostly for surfing the internet and playing online games. As far as school goes is Word available for a Netbook and is there a printer hookup?Tags: None -
Re: Netbooks Versus Notebooks/Regular Computers
Is the Netbook running Windows? Word's available.
Does the Netbook have a USB port? Printer hookup.
Netbooks are just mini computers... generally they have enough to be a main computer if they have to be.Rose City 'Til I Die

No idea and no idea. I would assume they run on solid state drives, and you're probably looking at 128gig or so. No idea about price.Rose City 'Til I Die

Re: Netbooks Versus Notebooks/Regular Computers
Other than not having an internal Drive you should be good. They come with from what I've seen no less than a gig of RAM
They have USB ports so its not that bad of a deal. Im not sure you'd be missing anything really.Comment

Re: Netbooks Versus Notebooks/Regular Computers
We got a laptop in the spring and considered getting a netbook. Netbooks are cheap but I think people are better off going with a true laptop. I'm not suggesting a $900 one since you can find a cheaper one. We got an Acer for not much more than C$500.
When we actually looked at Netbooks, they were so small I couldn't believe it. I think they must be hard to type on and work with. So we spent an extra $200-$300 to get a Laptop and you get a lot more bang for your buck. DVD burners, bigger screen, RAM, etc. If people just want to surf the internet on a portable cpu, might as well just get an IPhone or Blackberry. I'm no computer expert though. Students seem to like the netbook but I'm wondering if this just a bit of a fad that will disappear.
On another note, $300 for a niece is an awful pricey contribution for Christmas. That is one lucky girl!Comment

Re: Netbooks Versus Notebooks/Regular Computers
For what it's being used for, there's no need to waste the extra money on a Mac.
You could bump it up to a solid standard notebook that'll do a little more for around $500, though. I might recommend that... I'm not really a fan of a netbook if it is being intended for daily use.Green Bay Packers | Milwaukee Brewers | Bradley Braves | Wisconsin Badgers

Re: Netbooks Versus Notebooks/Regular Computers
I'd spend a little more and get a notebook. I'd check with some of the online black friday sales if you don't want to brave the crowds. walmart.com might be the way to goComment
