Re: Comcast buys 51% of NBC
Comcast has money like this to just buy that large a stake in NBC?

Re: Comcast buys 51% of NBC
Now that NBC has been bought it is not on standard cable (So it is CBS, ABC, FOX, PBS) and what is going to happen is eventually those networks will follow in selling out to stay competitive with NBC.Comment

Re: Comcast buys 51% of NBC
The actual NBC broadcast network is probably the least important part of the deal. Comcast gets the NBC Universal studios, content, and cable channels. Comcast could take these channels and jack the licensing prices up for Time Warner, Dish Network, etc. DirecTV recently dropped the Comcast owned Versus channel because of this. While Versus is largely irrelevant, other providers would actually have to bend over for USA, SyFy, MSNBC, Bravo, etc.
Comcast is trying to ride the wave of the future, which is hoarding content, and not giving a damn about cable infrastructure. Why put money in improving cable coverage or quality, when people will be watching more shows over the internet or IPTV stuff. They can make money leveraging their content now.Last edited by bkfount; 12-03-2009, 10:07 PM.Comment

Re: Comcast buys 51% of NBC
I'm guessing that's because you're in the NE. Comcast is the biggest cable company in the country.
2008 revenues (From Wiki)
Comcast: $34.256 billion
Cablevision: $7.230 billion
Subscribers as of June 2009 (http://www.ncta.com/Stats/TopMSOs.aspx)
1. Comcast: 23,891,000
5. Cablevision: 3,093,000Comment

With all that NBC owns, I would have thought it would make more sense for them to own Comcast. But, something tells me that there is a FCC law somewhere that prohibits this."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. Re: Comcast buys 51% of NBC
I knew that Comcast was the true rival of DirecTV, but I still didn't think they could afford to buy out NBC.

Re: Comcast buys 51% of NBC
Someone clear this up for me but did Comcast buy NBC Universal? or just NBC? There's a distinction between the two and I can see Comcast having more then enough money to buy NBC as a single entity. I did read that Comcast wanted to merge with the entire NBC Universal conglomeration of networks and other properties so I don't know what this is.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club
