Blu-ray players --- are they really worth it?

Considering jumping into the BR market. With prices as they are now, it seems like the time to do so. But are they really worth the bang for the buck? I mean how much better is a BR movie, especially one that relies on special fx over, say, upscaling the DVD to my 1080p flatscreen? I do understand that you want something that streams in content, but regardless, am I really going to enhance my electronics outfit with one?

Also, for those promoting them.... do you have any particular make/model that you would recommend?

Well, if you have a HDTV and a surround sound system, it's an absolute no brainer. You get better picture quality and much better audio quality. But at the same time, you will need the equipment to be able to take advantage of it. If you're still running with an old standard-def TV with no surround sound, then blu-ray isn't worth it.

I personally have a PS3 as my blu-ray player, so I don't know much about any other players. If you plan on getting any PS3 games, then just get a PS3 for your BR player.

Samsung BDP1500 is the best value from all I've read, and believe me, i've read a ton on it. If I was buying one that's what I'd get.

Sammy and Panasonic generally make the best BD players right now. Some of the new Samsung's are incredible, wish I would have waited to buy my BD player, I have a Sony but it's pretty bare bones. If I move it into another room, I'll be buying one of the Sammy's.

The Panasonic 1600 is incredible. I had that one for a while and loved it. I own an Oppo 83 and its the best BR player in the market but most people arent willing to drop that much money for a BR player/

All helpful. I was considering getting a PS3 since I'm interested in trying out The Show, but not real big on the controllers and not sure what other games are really worth it.....not enough time for what I have as it is. I do like Samsung products.... I have an upconveting DVD player as it is and their stuff seems to last.

The Panasonic 1600 looks like a projector. I'm not considering projectors.

IMO Blu-ray players are worth it to slowly upgrade. They're quality upconverters for regular DVD's, and you can buy Blu-rays over time. I'm not replacing all my current DVD's with Blu, but all new movies I get Blu-ray just so I'm slowly catching up. Given that they're pretty cheap now (relatively speaking) and you can get some that do netflix streaming, it's a pretty good deal. I just have my PS3, but my parents are looking into getting a regular Blu-ray player.

I'd still say if you even just want The Show it would be worth it man. The PS3 is still one of the highest rated Blu-rays, and at $299, if there are even only one or two games you want, you might as well just go with the PS3.

I'm still using the Panasonic BD35 and this thing has run like a champ. I haven't even updated the firmware since the initial update. Everything I have thrown at it this thing has worked well. For those looking at the Sammy's, go with the 1600 or higher. Don't look at any of their older models, they were problematic but the new ones have really come a very long way. It is about time that this tech was finally improved.

Blu ray is cool and all, but it's not for me. With 1080p online streaming movie rentals on 360 I have no desire to buy a blu ray player and expensive discs that i'll watch once.

Plus if I really like a movie I can download it in 720p from any torrent site and stream it to my TV.

thx, apparently unless you specifically search for BD-P1600, you get other crap. That's actually a better price than B&H.
