Wireless Router Help

Our internet connection went down today. I contacted our ISP(roadrunner) and they came out to fix the problem.

The tech told us that the modem was fried and he would swap out the modem. He fixed the wired computer, but told me that the internet was working through our router.(Linksys)

He said he couldn't go any further because we don't have a RR modem. Our router is probably 4-5 yrs old. Is it possible the router is dead? I see the port lights on, but that might not mean anything.

I contacted a local PC shop(Milwaukee PC) and the guy said all I would need to do is hook up a new Linksys router without using the software and without changing any passwords.

Is this true. If I bought a new router, all I would need to do is hook up the wiring? I hope it's the router and nothing more serious.

did you try restarting your network first? Unplug the modem and plug it back in a wait about 30 seconds. Then do the same for the router.

the modem needs to be going to the router before you do this (not sure if you have the router hooked up, or your modem is going straight to the computer right now.)

Most likely it's just a setting in the router. Did you set up the router yourself or have someone do it when you first got it??

Ok - so what you're saying is the modem is working and the computer plugged into it is working, but you have a wireless router attached and it's not working?

I was a little confused reading your post, but that's what I'm pulling out of it.

If your router is also dead - just get a new one, plug it into the back of the modem and then plug your wired computer into it and you're good to go, yes. It's really that simple for the most part.

If you want security, you'll have to set that up too - but that's only takes a minute or two as well.

I had someone help me with the router.

I know I tried unplugging the router yesterday with the dead modem, but I haven't tried it with the new modem.

I'll give that a whirl and try it out.

Mc, looks like we posted at the same time. Yeah, you guessed what I was trying to say. I'll try what Heelfan suggested.

If not, I'll just go out and pick out a new router. The manager at Milw PC told me they are around $40.00

yeah, try that first. Unplug your modem and connect it to your router, then connect the router to the PC. Turn the power on the modem first and wait 30 seconds. Then turn on the router.

If you do get a new router I would highly suggest locking it down with some security and not to leave it wide open for people to access.

yeah it's always nice when my neighbors do that just in case my internet goes down. i'm not complaining!

I saw my brother-in-law over Xmas and he's pretty sharp with computers. He feels that since our cable company swapped out our modem, that there is a new IP addy set. He feels I should be able to reconfigure the router or reset it back to factory settings before buying a new one.

He mentioned if resetting back to factory settings fail, then I need a new router. I'll see what happens with this.

As of right now, I lose connectivity wiring modem to router and router to PC. I have connectivity with PC to modem.

if you hook up the modem straight to the pc (the only way it's working now), there should be something you type to get into your modem settings. Usually it is an IP address or on mine I just type " launchmodem " (without the quotes ) in the address bar. Look on the modem for something like this, usually tells you what you need to type in somewhere on the modem.

If you get into the modem setup, look for something that says "Bridged Ethernet" or "PPOE" and post back.

What is the modem model # ?
What is the router model # ??
Who is your internet with ?

Can I just go into DOS and type IP Config. I do get a gateway IP address, but I tried to type that into the address bar and I get "Page not accessible. Is that what you are referring to?

I only see MAC with numbers and lettering on the back of the modem.

It's a Linksys Wireless G Router.

I also see a S/N number for the modem, the brand is Scientific Atlanta with a P/N # and hardware firmware 2.1 revision #.

Update:

After a few tests(reconfiguring and setting factory settings back to 0), I determined that old router died. There was just no connection between router and modem.

So, I bought a new router(similar without the antennas) and plugged everything in. For some odd reason, the router and the cpu blue cable were not connecting. Maybe it's because I didn't have the old blue cable wired properly(snuggly, if you will). I swapped out the old for the new blue cable, and that cured it.

Our household is again wireless and secured.
