    Up In The Air

Tied for the best movie I’ve seen this year. Up In The Air will likely win the Oscar for Best Picture.

Rather than talk about George Clooney first, I have to mention Anna Kendrick. I’ve never seen her outside of the first Twilight movie but this movie will make her a major star. I expect to see her earn a nomination for Best Supporting Actress. While George Clooney plays a character travelling around the US to tell people they are getting laid off, Anna Kendrick’s character develops a video conferencing method of laying people off without ever leaving the office. She matches Clooney line for line and more than holds her own in their scenes together (there are lots of them). Her wide eyed naïve character blends in nicely with the calm methodical character of Clooney. I’m telling you right now, you will become a fan of Anna Kendrick after you watch Up In The Air.

As for Clooney, this is my favourite performance of his. He is completely believable as a corporate downsizer. I thought his chemistry with Vera Farmiga was good but not as good as with Kendrick. I have no problem with Clooney getting a Oscar nomination as Best Actor but I’m on the fence with Farmiga. Zack Galifianakis and JK Simmons deliver in their only scene. Jason Bateman appearing in his 376th movie in the past 2 years does an admirable job as Clooney’s boss. Up In The Air even has a random Young MC cameo.

Jason Reitman is a lock to be nominated as Best Director. The framing of his shots are top notch. I liked the intro credits and the first scene where Clooney walks through the security screening at the airport. My favourite shot of the movie is near the end when Clooney looks up at the arrival/departure board.

Up In The Air is about the importance of connection. This film is interesting from start to finish and filled with a surprising number of comedic moments. You’re not going to watch a better film in 2009.

Officially the genre is Drama/Comedy. I know Jason Reitman doesn't like the film put in a specific category. I didn't expect to laugh as much as I did.

The trailers I saw made it seem like a dramedy so to remark on the number of comedic moments doesn't surprise me. Is Reitman the son of Ivan? Anyways thanks for this great review as I didn't exactly know what the movie was about but it looks intriguing to me. The promotional material i've seen gives it the feel of a James Stewart movie from the '40s.

        Anyways i'll watch this ASAP.

          Yes Jason is Ivan's son.

My "review" didn't do a good job of explaining the whole plot. Even Jason said he has a hard time explaning the movie in a line or 2. One big part of the plot I left out is that Clooney takes Kendrick out on the road with him to show her how he operates. There are other elements to the film but I don't want to give everything away.

I thoroughly enjoyed this film. Clooney was great, and at first Kendrick annoyed me, but it got better throughout the movie. Probably one of the best films I've seen all year.

I just watched this movie with my my second mainest friend.

The girl who has been receiving much acclaim was very good, but Clooney carried this.

I hate Clooney as a person and I don't particularly like him as an actor, but he deserves the Best Actor Oscar and I don't think a discussion is necessary.

I posted this in the movies recently watched thread, but I thought this movie was flawless on a technical level, and I couldn't find a single bad thing to say about it.

Jason Reitman was a guest on the BS Report podcast today.

He said if Clooney didn't agree to be in the film, his second choice was Steve Martin. He would have re-written the movie to give it a Bill Murray/Lost In Translation type vibe.

He also mentioned the Rock's agent pitched to him the Rock as Nick Naylor in Thank You For Smoking.

He's starting on his next project next week. It's a really good listen if you're a Reitman fan.
