    Sherlock Holmes

Maybe I missed it, but I was surprised there wasn't a thread for this yet...

Did anyone else see it? I took vacation this week so I went to see it this afternoon. I thought it was really good. Downey and Jude Law were excellent. I also thought the actor who played Lord Blackwood was good. Definitely looking forward to the sequel.

I definitely want to see this... although I still want to see Avatar again too, lol.

I saw it. It was a fun movie. Jude Law was exceptional, Downey was charismatic, and the woman playing Watson's wife was turrble.

i absolutely loved it! i am a holmes fanatic (probably close to 100 books in my library). honestly, i believe THIS to be what arthur conan doyle had in mind for the character he created - not some "older" guy who partners up with a fat, old dumb-witted partner.

my wife went with me to see it Christmas day afternoon...i took my 10 year old son to see it again that night. i've never done that ever before with any movie. it is action packed, a great plot, and the characters mesh very well together.

and they've also set the plot up for a sequel...but i'll leave it at that.

i highly recommend it, even if you haven't read the books...great movie.

"older" guy? You do know the most iconic of the cinematic Holmes was 46 when he took the job (Basil Rathbone) and Downey is 44. So let's not go there. I'll admit Watson was completely dumbed down but he was pretty good character wise in the first Rathbone Holmes film (Hound of the Baskervilles (1939))

Anyways I plan to see this but I need to know is there actually some MYSTERY to it? Does Holmes actual use his deductive reasoning? I don't want to just see another action fest.

            Re: Sherlock Holmes

my bad...by "old" i mean more in the way they "act" than in age...i should have clarified that. i have all the jeremy brett videos, as well as a bunch of movies in which Rathbone played him. these guys give the appearance of acting older than their age (hard to explain, but i think you catch my drift).

regarding your question of the "mystery" aspect - yes, it is a HUGE part of the movie. it's much, much more than just an action movie. they did a nice mix of putting this movie together for the person looking at holmes from his "deductive reasoning" (most likely the avid readers) and also the casual fan looking for something fun to watch, having no real knowledge of what holmes' character was. i think you'll like it...

Ah yes I catch your drift now. BTW if you haven't seen it you should seek out the Hammer Studios Hound of the Baskervilles (1959) with Peter Cushing as Holmes. They gave the story a bit of a gothic horror element to it which of course means they had to change the story up a bit but it's still a real good movie. Tis a shame that Hammer Studios didn't pursue a Sherlock Holmes series of films.

Whew, that put my mind to rest. All of the promotional materials i've seen for the movie makes it look like an action film only.

don't go by the trailers... trust me, they didn't give anything away and some of the storyline i never saw coming. that's what shocked me most.

and thanks for the insight...i'll check that out. do you read many of the books?

if you do, check out a couple books by Mark Frost: "The List of Seven" and "The Six Messiahs" - they are not about Holmes, but rather about Arthur Conan Doyle (as the lead character). VERY well done.

I've only now gotten into Sherlock Holmes so I haven't read any of the books. I'm kinda kicking myself a bit because last summer I saw a collection of Holmes stories selling for something like 15 bucks at the book store here.

Oh well, i'll go to the library and get some stuff and will definitely get those two books in my hands after i'm a bit more steeped in the lore.

Have you ever heard the radio broadcasts from the 1940's brought to you by Petri Wines (THe family that took time to bring you good wine) and Kremel Hair tonic? Rathbone and Bruce were excellent even on the radio. I was worried that this movie would be a cheap knock off. I thought it was brilliant.

Saw this with my gf last night. We both agreed, it was a FANTASTIC movie. Great story, acting, writing, action, mystery, video work, etc etc etc.

                        Everyone should see this.

There's little doubt a sequel will happen based on the way the movie ended and that it's listed on IMDB under Downey's profile (even though IMDB isn't always accurate).

I had not heard that Moriarty would be played by Pitt though (also on Pitt's IMDB page). Definitely should be interesting.

I saw it last night. Pretty good. Took a lot from "Pysch" and "The Mentalist" as far as how he finds his clues and stuff.
