Pretty interesting... I know TSA has been experimenting with these.

interesting, but expensive overkill really.

There was enough info on the guy to throw up a red flag somewhere. He was on a watch list, but not the no-fly list. The lack of invasive full body scans at airports didn't seem like the issue.

There was enough info on the guy to throw up a red flag somewhere. He was on a watch list, but not the no-fly list. The lack of invasive full body scans at airports didn't seem like the issue.

No fly list or not he still got on a plane with an explosive device. Somewhere along the line a much bigger mistake was made by security officials.

not really, some people are just sensitive to the government being able to tap your phones or having full body scans of you on a hard drive somewhere.

I would think if somebody is that paranoid about government conspiracy, they probably won't be found outside of their tin foil lined basement anyway.

A full body scan at an airport is completely different than the government tapping random phone lines. In a public place such as an airport you have no reasonable expectation of privacy, couple that with the huge public safety concern attached to flying and I surmise you have absolutely no invasion of privacy. Anything that scan could reveal that would pose any problem would be illegal and when engaged in criminal activity you have no reasonable expectation of privacy.

Seriously the law focuses on what the reasonable person would think. People paranoid of the government having a scan of our skeleton on file are not the reasonable people the law should be catering to.

I merely think stuff like this, along with checking shoes and limiting liquids is mostly security theater though. The actual relevance of these kinds of checks depends entirely on the idea that we can protect ourselves from terrorism by protecting against what the terrorists tried last time. It's both an awful way to combat terrorism, and an utter waste of money.

The actual relevance of these kinds of checks depends entirely on the idea that we can protect ourselves from terrorism by protecting against what the terrorists tried last time. It's both an awful way to combat terrorism, and an utter waste of money.

I won't dispute you on your last point especially considering we have yet to really deal with suicide bombers. But for now it seems that "they" are trying to use planes, so a painless, legal search to prevent that harms no one.

I would think that if you had loved ones who were getting ready to fly out on their vacation, blown up by a guy who did so b/c he wanted to snatch a divine date with a bunch of virgins, you wouldn't think this was overkill (interesting term now, eh). We waste so much money on such nonsense in this country, we could do it if we set our priorities much better.

I like one callers idea on a late night talk show I just heard talking about applications to be passengers on flights. It's a privilege, not a right.
